Geraint Goodwin letters

Papers relating to correspondence between Geraint Goodwin and Edward Garnett, published in The Anglo-Welsh Review, vol. 22, no 49. The file mainly comprises correspondence, 1969-1970 and 1972-1973, mostly between Roland Mathias and Rhoda Goodwin, widow of Geraint Goodwin. The file also contains photocopies of letters from Edward Garnett to Geraint Goodwin, 1935-1937; George Moore, 1928-1929; Charles Morgan, 1929-1930 and 1935.

The file contains various papers, [1950]-[1990] (with gaps), relating to The Anglo-Welsh Review, including accounts, 1969-1974; notes regarding the contents of some numbers of the journal, [1966-1973]; typescript copies of the article, 'The young historian : some letters from Alun Lewis', [1970x1990]; a tribute by Roland Mathias to Gillian Clarke, 1985, on her retirement as editor of the magazine; and the article 'Roland Mathias looks back over the twenty six years of The Anglo Welsh Review', published in Llais Llyfrau, (1976); copies of the article by Raymond Garlick 'On the growing of Dock Leaves', Planet 9 (1971/1972), and interview with Raymond Garlick, also published in Planet 62 (1987); and reprint of the article by Kyffin Williams, 'An artist in Welsh Patagonia', from The Anglo-Welsh Review, no. 42 (1970).

The roses of Tretower

The notebook contains lists of periodicals, individuals and booksellers, whom it was intended should receive copies of The roses of Tretower (Pembroke Dock, 1952); and also details of copies sold, 1952-1954. Enclosed are related receipts and bank slips.

A ride through the wood

The file mainly comprises typescript drafts, [1977]-1985, of some of the articles which appeared in A ride through the wood : essays on Anglo-Welsh literature, (Bridgend, 1985), including essays on David Jones, Alun Lewis, and Emyr Humphreys. Also included is a reprint of the article 'David Jones - towards the 'holy diversities'' from Transactions of the Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion (1981); and a printed copy of the Annual Gwyn Jones lecture, The lonely editor: a glance at Anglo-Welsh magazines (Cardiff, 1984).

The shining pyramid

The file contains papers, c. 1969, relating to The shining pyramid and other stories by Welsh authors, edited by Sam Adams and Roland Mathias (Llandysul, 1970), namely galley and page proofs of the book, together with mostly photocopies of stories included in the volume and typescript drafts of 'Acknowledgements', 'Introduction' and 'Notes on the authors'.

The collected short sories of Geraint Goodwin

The file includes photocopies of stories by Geraint Goodwin, [c. 1975], together with a copy of the book The white farm & other stories (Bath, 1968), which appear to have been used by Sam Adams and Roland Mathias whilst editing The collected short stories of Geraint Goodwin (Tenby, 1976).

David Jones

Typescript copies containing some manuscript amendments, 1976, 1978 and 1981, of the Preface by Roland Mathias to David Jones : eight essays on his work as writer and artist, ed. R. Mathias (Llandysul, 1976); the article 'David Jones: three letters', published in The Anglo-Welsh Review, no. 61 (1978); and a further article about the writer, 1981. Also included is a leaflet regarding the David Jones weekend conference organised by Yr Academi Gymreig (English Language Section) in 1975.

Papers, [c. 1983], relating to Anglo-Welsh poetry : 1480-1980 (Bridgend, 1984). Also included are typescripts and photocopies of poems which may have been accumulated during the compilation of this volume.

Dannie Abse

Typescript copy, [1970], of the entry for Dannie Abse in Contemporary poets, ed. R. Murphy and J. Vinson (London, 1970), together with additional notes, [1979x1990], which appear to have been compiled for a subsequent edition.

Two typescripts containing some manuscript amendments, together with galley proofs, of the essay 'Thin spring and tributary : Welshmen writing in English', included in Anatomy of Wales, ed. R. Brinley Jones (Peterston-super-Ely, Glamorgan, 1972).

'A niche for Dylan Thomas'

Typescript copies of 'A merry manshape (or Dylan Thomas at a distance)', [1950x1970]; and 'A niche for Dylan Thomas', [1973], which appears to be an earlier draft of the article published in Poetry Wales, vol. 9, no. 2 (Autumn 1973).

'Death of a naturalist'

The file includes typescript drafts (one incomplete), [c. 1981], of the essay 'Death of a naturalist', included in the volume The art of Seamus Heaney, ed. Tony Curtis (Bridgend, 1982), together with a typescript of what appears to be a lecture or talk on Seamus Heaney, and related research notes, [1979x1990].
