A 14th century manuscript in French prose containing the romance of Ywain (Owain ap Thomas ap Rhodri, otherwise Owain Lawgoch, otherwise Yvain de Galles (c. 1300-1378)). There is a rubric heading: 'Ceste liure est le liure de monseignor Y. et parole de maint buen cheualiers' and the text begins 'En ceste partie dit li contes que misser Yuain le fis au roi Vrien cheuauchait par une grant forest qui estoit apellee la perilleuse foreste ...'. The episode of the lion and dragon fighting (cf. Chrestien de Troyes, Le Chevalier au Lion, ll. 3341 sqq.) occurs on p. 1. There is a lacuna after p. 2. The text ends imperfectly. Inserted at the beginning is a letter to Lord Ashburnham from Thomas Boone the bookseller, 29 New Bond Street, 10 April [1852], concerning his purchase, on 'Ld. A.'s' behalf, of the following lots [at the Louis Philippe sale]: 1108 [Ashburnham Appendix 16] for 1605 fr., 1115 (Ashburnham Appendix 152) for 2150 fr., 1303 (Ashburnham Appendix 167, formerly Williams MS 529, now NLW MS 443D) for 1250 fr. and 1306 (formerly Williams MS 530, now NLW MS 444D) for 1960 fr. The manuscript includes coloured drawings illustrating the text, and a few illuminated initials.

Cydfod yr Ysgrythyrau Sanctaidd

A volume, [early 17 cent.], containing a concordance of the Welsh Bible in the hand of Robert Vaughan of Hengwrt. This manuscript was discovered by the Rev. Evan Evans (Ieuan Brydydd Hir, 1731-1788) at Bala in 1765 (see Gweithiau Ieuan Brydydd Hir, p. 199); he intended to print the manuscript at Carmarthen (ibid, p. 205). As a concordance, it is vastly inferior to that of Abel Morgan which was printed at Philadelphia in 1730, and also to that of Peter Williams, published at Carmarthen in 1773.

Vaughan, Robert, 1592-1667

The writer notes that "this curious fragment of the Laws of the Bards was faithfully copied from an ancient parchment roll, which is in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford".

A volume containing a copy of Cardiff MS 59 made by Egerton Grenville Bagot Phillimore (1856-1937), antiquary, at various dates between 1886 and 1891. The copy ends on p. 75 of the original manuscript and the rest of the original manuscript was copied into another volume, now NLW MS 142B. Though the original manuscript is usually attributed to Thomas Jones (Twm Sion Cati) he was in fact dead in 1611, when the manuscript was written; proof of this is to be seen in an Exchequer Deposition 8 Jas I, Easter 13, where Jones's widow is described as 'Dame Johan Devereux nowe wife of Sir George Devereux, knt., late wife of Thomas Jones, gent.', the date of this entry being April 12 1610. Voluminous notes by Phillimore have been added to the copied manuscript. With NLW MS 142B.
