The Customs of Hereford

A copy of the customs of Hereford as newly written by John Chippenham, mayor of Hereford, in 1486, and exemplified by James Yayden in 1560 (ff. 1-17). Several Welsh Boroughs were granted the privileges of the city of Hereford, and the newly enfranchised corporations applied to the burgesses of Hereford to have their privileges certified to them. This manuscript begins with the answer given to the town of Drusselan in the parts of Wales in the year of Henry son of Henry I [sic], and also contains statements made at the request of the burgesses of Kermerden, Herford and Kardyff. At the end of the volume is a list of the mayors of Hereford from 1383 to 1563 in the original hand, with additions in other hands to 1605 (ff. 18-19 verso).

Title deeds for Prior’s Court, Gwirlod Gwillim, Keven y Wern and other lands in the parish of Llan-gors, 1563-1664. They include conveyances by Sir Robert Dudley, Knight of the Garter, etc., to John Edmundes, Lewis Thomas Forster and William Watkins, of Le Kevenwerne or Kenwerne, Pryors Courte and other lands, 1563; deeds recording the acquisition of various lands including Gwirlod Gwillim by William Thomas Forster, 1580, and by Lewis Thomas Forster, 1589-1605; the marriage settlements of Lewis John Edmonde of Llan-gors and Katherine vch John William Thomas Lewis of Llanbedr, 1587, and of William Forster and Anne Vaughan, daughter of Richard Vaughan of Crickhowell, deceased, 1607; the lease of a house by William Watkins, from which the rent devolved to Lewes Thomas Lewes and Ellinor his wife, in tail, 1600; several deeds of sale by William Forster to Ellinor Lewis, 1616-1621; further purchases of Keven y Wern Ycha and other properties by Ellinor Lewis 1625-1636, from the Jenkin family; and conveyances by William Thomas Bevan of a messuage occupied by Sibill William, sold by his son Thomas William to Thomas Lewis, 1663-1664.

Deeds relating to houses and lands in the parish of Betws Cedewain, comprising a lease by Rees ap Morys ap Owen of Aberbechan to Tanglyst vch D’d Morys of a messuage called Gllan Bechan, Wain Vaure and other lands (unspecified), 1564; and bonds to and by Richard Pryse of Gogerddan, for peaceful possession of the messuage of George Phippes, arable land called Yr Hen Rofft and other meadows (named), 1595; and of the lands of David ap John Bedo, in Garthgelyn, 1596.

They include a tenement acquired by John Pryse of Gogerddan, 1564; a meadow called Dole y Pluma, mortgaged by Richard and Henry Phillipps of Aberystwyth to Thomas Pryse of Glanfred, 1602/3; parcels of land sold by Richard Herbert of Llanfihangel-y-Creuddyn, John Mores of Faenor and others to Sir Richard Pryse, including Tyr y Vaynor, 1607-1609; a dwelling house mortgaged by David ap Rees to Sir Richard Pryse, 1607; Tythyn Dorrglwyd, mortgaged by Rice Gwyn ap Richard of Llanfihangel-y-Creuddyn and David Vaughan ap Watkin of Rosgill, Llanbadarn Fawr, 1607; a life interest in Nant ?Addawase transferred by Thomas Rees of Llanbadarn Fawr to his son Rees Thomas, 1639; Doleyglessin and Tythin Keven yr Hendre in Faenor, Tyddyn Maes Bangor in Cwmrheidol, and a house in Heol y Velin, comprised in two quitclaims by Jane Vaughan, sister of James Lewis of Llanbadarn Fawr and widow of David Vaughan late of Rhosgillan, to Thomas Pryse of Inisgrigog, 1649, and to her ‘well beloved kinsman’ Richard Pryse of Gogerddan, 1651/2; and a covenant by Jane Vaughan to redeem mortages on Tyddyn yr Skybor Hen Dan Allt Glais in Dyffryn Clarach, Parsel Isaf, Faenor, and Tyddyn Vach Wrth y Wayn-Vawr, Parcel Uchaf, Faenor, and convey them to Sir Richard Pryse, 1651/2.
