A scrapbook, 1867-1882, begun by Evelyn Phillip Shirley of Ettington Park, Warwickshire, following his visit in August 1867 to his friend W. W. E. Wynne of Peniarth, Merioneth.
The volume initially contained ten photographs of Peniarth and its environs (ff. 11, 19, 21, 23, 25, 29, 31, 33, 37, 40) with numerous further photographs (and photographs of prints) being added showing other local views and related houses such as Glyn (ff. i verso-47 passim). Also included are leaves from W. W. E. Wynne's Pedigree of the Family of Wynne of Peniarth… (London, 1872), with hand-painted coats of arms added (ff. 2 recto-verso, 12 recto-verso, 20 recto-verso, 22 recto-verso, 24 recto-verso, 26 recto-verso), and additional manuscript notes by Wynne (ff. 13-18); four letters to Shirley from W. W. E. Wynne, [1868]-1877 (ff. i verso, 3-10, 34-35); three letters, June-July 1880, from W. R. M. Wynne (ff. 41-44) and E[dward] Breese (ff. 45-46), following W. W. E. Wynne's death, with copies of Breese's obituary of Wynne (ff. 50-52); and papers relating to the building and consecration of the Wynne Memorial Church at Bryncrug, 1880-1882 (ff. 53-59).

Six letters and fragment of another, 1861-1864, from Guiseppe Mazzini (1805-1872), advocate of Italian unity, to William Rees (Gwilym Hiraethog), one of which is written on a printed circular for subscribers to an association to succeed the Friends of Italy (ff. 1-13). Four of the letters have been published in William Rees (Hiraethog): A Memoir by his son Ebenezer Rees, ed. by H. Elvet Lewis, M.A. (Liverpool, 1915); see also NLW Journal vol. I (1940), p. 149. Also included is a postcard, 1880, from William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898), to Gwilym Hiraethog (f. 14).

Edmund Evans's name appears in the front cover of the volume with various notes and on the first pages of the text. Handwritten notes are loose between pp.24-25. A newspaper cutting (1879) reporting the death of Evan R. Evans, his son, in Cambria, Winconsin, has been glued on the second page of the New Testament. At the end of the volume a list, in Edmund Evans' hand, states the dates of birth and death of his children with his wife Ellin. Additionally, the file also contains an envelope in which there is a newspaper cutting reporting the history of the Bible, published in the Daily Post, 3 July 2019.

Some Notice of William Herbert, first Earl of Pembroke

A manuscript monograph, [1878], entitled 'Some Notice of William Herbert, first Earl of Pembroke of the present creation', by J[ames] E[dward] Nightingale, F.S.A. (ff. 1-59). It was published, under that title, in The Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Magazine, 18 (October 1878), 81-131. The notice places particular emphasis on the politics of the time, in which Herbert played a prominent role, and on his Wiltshire connections.
The text is complete except for some two paragraphs (corresponding to the top of p. 114 in print), missing due to the bottom of f. 36 having been cut away, and a single sentence (top of p. 128) missing from f. 55. There are manuscript emendations throughout, including some revisions supplied as pasteovers (ff. 11, 21, 22, 23, 33, 42, 47); footnotes have been inserted on paper flaps attached to page margins (ff. 2-3, 5, 8, 12, 14, 16-17, 19-20, 22, 23-24, 25-30, 32-35, 37-44, 46, 48-49, 52-53, 56, 57, 59), and occasionally as separate leaves (ff. 6a, 6b, 24a). Also included are earlier drafts of a few sections of text and footnotes (ff. 22a, 22b, 43a, 56a, 61-62) and notes, references and transcripts of related letters and documents (ff. 60 recto-verso, 61 verso-64).

Papers, 1630-[?1877], of the Griffith family of Garn, Henllan, Denbighshire, mostly relating to George Griffith.
The papers comprise twenty-six letters, 1841-1865, to George Griffith (ff. 44-94), including ten from his wife Charlotte Griffith (née Douglas), March 1841, on the illness and death of her brother Hargreave (ff. 44-63), and ten from Joseph Brereton, Liverpool, 1861-1862 (ff. 69-79, 82-89); nine letters, 1833-1842, to Charlotte Griffith (ff. 22-43); and eleven letters, 1763-1848, addressed to other members of the family (ff. 1-21); together with other papers of George Griffith, [1850s]-[?1877] (some 100 items in total), which include draft and copy letters, newspaper correspondence, and drafts of articles and speeches, mostly by Griffith, on topics of both national interest, such as taxation, the Game Laws, the Reform Bill, etc, and local Denbighshire interest (ff. 95-415), some being written on the reverse of printed ephemera, dated 1859-1866 (ff. 95-108, 245-246, 306-307, 309-310). Also included are miscellaneous items including a receipt, dated 1 October 1630 (f. 416); part of a transcript, [?1690], of a valuation of the Lordship of Ruthin (ff. 417-418); draft answers, [c. 1705], to a bill of complaint of Richard Griffith, relating to the 1686 marriage agreement of Grace Williams, Coedmawr, and John Williams, Caerberllan (ff. 419-423); notes, [c. 1816], on Napoleon and recent European military matters (ff. 424-430); and a letter, 30 October 1853, from [the Deputy Assistant Adjutant General], Scutari, [Istanbul], to the Commanding Officer of the troops at Kulali, [Istanbul] (f. 431). A letter, 4 November 1958, from Ermine Dixon, Preston, to Edward Hall is included (f. iii), together with a few notes on specific items, apparently in the hand of Edward Hall (ff. 2a, 3a, 7a, 13a, 16a, 21b, 416a, 423a).

A volume containing Welsh poetry in free and strict metres, in the hand of David Evans (Dewi Dysul), Llandysul, Cardiganshire (see W. J. Davies, Hanes Plwyf Llandyssul (Llandysul, 1896, repr. 1992), pp. 253-5), mostly written by himself and relating to local events and personalities. Also included are diary entries, 1839-1872, relating to the weather and agricultural memoranda (ff. 70-81verso, inverted text).
The volume contains a Welsh carol, 1828 (ff. 1-2), Welsh poems sent as Valentines, 1850-1851 (ff. 13, 15, 33), a poem in praise of Llanover Hall, [1860s] (f. 52 verso), a poem in praise of John Hopkins (Ioan Glan Tees), 1863 (ff. 53 recto-verso), a Welsh metrical version of Mother Shipton's Prophecy, 1873 (f. 59), a poem on the death of the son of David Davies (Glan Cunllo), 1867 (f. 55 verso), and a chart of early-nineteenth century Welsh poets compiled by John William Thomas (Arfonwyson), [c. 1840] (f. 74 verso).

Journal of a tour in South-east Wales

Journal, [mid 1820s] (watermark 1822), of a tour through parts of Monmouthshire, Glamorgan and Breconshire, [26] July-[?3] August 1822, in the company of the Rev. B[arton] B[ouchier] and his wife. The author is unidentified but was a resident of Monmouth; the journal was compiled by him after the fact from his notebooks. The tour began and ended in Monmouth, going west as far as Neath, then northwards to Brecon (NLW ex 2962 (i)).
Also included are: a volume of religious notes, [?1820s], in the same hand as the journal (NLW ex 2962 (ii)); and a mid-Victorian album of cartes de visite relating to the family of Edward Smalley Hutchinson of Radcliffe, Lancashire, and Longworth Hall, Lugwardine, Herefordshire, containing thirty-four photographs of family members and five depicting at least two different churches, one being the parish church of St Mary, Radcliffe (NLW ex2962 (iii)).
