Letter from Thomas Gee, Denbigh,

Is pleased John Herbert Lewis's health is improved. The Convention at Aberystwyth was a success. Was placed 'in a very responsible position' by 'you "great people" in London', but felt obliged to obey the 'imperious' mandate received through Beriah Gwynfe Evans. Congratulations on the stand taken against the London & North Western Railway Bill. The North Wales Times will always be happy to publish messages from John Herbert Lewis to his constituents. Typescript copy.

Letter from Frank Edwards, House of Commons,

Arrangements for pairing in the Commons. 'Yesterday passed off very quietly after all. Balfour was most obliging. Our outlook today is more relieved than it has been lately. Osborne Morgan wants a meeting of our party to discuss George's and your amendments'. George has arrived.

Letter from J. Towyn Jones, Garnant,

Encloses a resolution passed at the annual meeting of the East Carmarthenshire Liberal Association expressing thanks to Lloyd George and John Herbert Lewis. The South Wales Daily News is the most reluctant of the papers to acknowledge their services. Welsh.

Letter from Frank Edwards, Knighton,

Reflections on loss of seat in Parliament - 'We have succumbed to beer bribery, Parish Councils, landlord pressure & the Asylum'. Chief regret is losing the company of John Herbert Lewis and Lloyd George. 'My public life is at an end. I would not take any other seat. I could not go to a mining district for I am against the 8 hours bill: & no agricultural seat is to be won save with hard work'. Suffered defeat at Presteign because 'we have no sort of capable leaders'. 'So Radnorshire is lost for good to the Liberals. I was awfully sorry for my friends who have done so much for me. They take the defeat much more to heart than I do'.

Letter from Thomas Gee, Denbigh,

Is relieved that John Herbert Lewis can bear the terrible shock of his wife's death. Believes the corrected Constitution is an improvement, but the constituencies and branches should enjoy much more independence. Plans to set up small Liberal Federations would cause dissension in South Wales and would jeopardise prospects of a single National Federation. Gives details of the Aberystwyth Convention and anticipates the Llandrindod meeting tomorrow. Hopes a motion will be passed that 'the whole of Wales should be united in one Federation'. The corrected edition of the Constitution should be made more intelligible.

Letter from Henry Owen, New University Club,

Thanks for letter and official reply. The same bundle contained confidential papers dating from 1797. The papers of most government offices are open until 1840, but not the State Office. The submission of the extracts to the Secretary of State. The records of a nineteenth-century Welsh trial have been removed from the county, 'a petty piece of bureaucratic tyranny'.

Letter from J Scott Bankes, Bath,

The object of John Herbert Lewis's bill is 'most desirable & urgently needed', but he should ascertain whether 'a more comprehensive bill dealing with local option & other much needed licensing reforms' could be placed on the agenda paper.

Letter from John Owen, Johannesburg,

Thanks for John Herbert Lewis's help. Describes the voyage and experiences at Capetown, Kimberley, Bechuanaland and Bulawayo. Discusses conditions and politics in South Africa. Hopes that the character of Lloyd George has been 'publicly vindicated'.

Letter from John Jones, Halkyn, Holywell,

Thanks for bringing to the attention of Parliament the question of irregular attendance at elementary schools. Has been critical of failure to deal with offences against the 1870 Elementary Education Act. '3,500 children in Flintshire are playing about the roads or are illegally employed.... Compulsion is a mere farce in this country'. Many parents are too greedy and selfish.

Letter from Frank Edwards, Knighton,

Enquires of the motto which he should use as sheriff on his coat of arms. A strike in the coal industry seems inevitable. Reflections on political life - 'That evil genius Joseph is troubling the Tory camp as he troubled the Liberal. Salisbury is weak but I would rather trust him than Chamberlain'. Much admires John Herbert Lewis's campaign for a National Museum. Saw Lloyd George in the National Liberal Club.

Letter from Frank Edwards, Bath,

Thanks for letter and enclosure from Mundella. Is sorry Acland is retiring from Parliament - 'a material loss, especially so in view of the troublesome times that are before us over elementary schools. He has great capacity, great energy & a safe seat'. Anticipates his first Assize on the 22 and 23 July.

Letter from Cadwaladr Davies, 3 Brick Court, Temple,

CD and T E Ellis are attempting to establish five or six lecture centres in Wales in connection with the Gilchrist Trust. Would John Herbert Lewis like a centre in one of the towns in his constituency? Mold might be a suitable centre or Holywell. Would welcome John Herbert Lewis's response.
