Agenda and meeting documents

The file comprises an agenda and supporting papers for the Welsh Affairs Committee meeting on 18 December 2001 where officials of the Children's Society; Ian Sparks (Chief Executive), Lady Toulson (Chair of the Trustees), Mr Charles Nall (Director of Finance and Administration) and the Revd. Glover (Church in Wales nominee to the Board of Trustees) were questioned about the decision to close the society's operations in Wales.

The Group annual reports for 1983-1984 and 1991-1992 are duplicated. Kept in a separate archival envelope but included in this folder are: Correspondence, 1992, 1994, 1998, relating to the receipt of Group annual reports by various Welsh bodies; a circular, 1987, to Group members from Group secretary Mary Griffiths; two postcards, 1997-1998, to Group secretary Bob Weir from art historian and author David Fraser Jenkins; and mailing lists for Group annual reports, 1987-1993, 1996/97. Some folios are annotated by Group secretary Mary Griffiths and others.

Anti-Smacking Campaign

Papers related to a long running campaign to ban smacking children, through removal of the "reasonable chastisement" in Welsh law. The file includes correspondence with Assembly Members, Ministers, legal officials and the Director of Public Prosecutions, Keir Starmer and an opinion from the First Minister, Carwyn Jones indicating that he believed the law was within the competence of the Assembly. The file also contains drafts of speeches given by Christine Chapman, articles and press releases, annotated drafts of legislation, letters from private citizens giving their opinion on the legislation and papers giving international comparisons.

Applications for membership

Correspondence, 2005-2007 and undated, between Group committee members and potential Group members, including circular letter, 2007, from Group secretary Peter Seabourne to potential Group members; and letter, 2005, to Group secretary Bob Weir requesting information for academic essay.
