The file comprises descriptions of paintings and etchings by Augustus John held at various galleries, including Birmingham City Gallery, National Portrait Gallery, Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, the Walker Gallery, Liverpool, Leeds Art Gallery, the Tate Gallery, National Museum of Wales, Cardiff, Manchester City Gallery and Whitworth Gallery, together with a short list of representations of the artist by other painters. Included are photocopies of letters, 1926, relating to the portrait of Dr Gustav Stresemann by Augustus John which was purchased by the Albright Art Gallery in Buffalo, USA, and a letter, 1938, from the National Art-Collections Fund to the Dunedin Public Art Gallery Society, New Zeland, relating to the purchase of a girl's portrait. -- Also included are examples of book covers of novels by Sylvia Townsend Warner published in 1978 which featured 'The red feather' and 'French fisher-boy', paintings by Augustus John.
The file comprises notes, [1968]-[1969], about Augustus John and his family from the reminiscences of those who knew him in his early days in Tenby, as a student in the Slade and afterwards, including Simon Asquith, Michael Ayrton, Cecil Beaton, 'Notes on a friendship during the last 15 years of his life' by Sven Berlin, Chiquita Birbeck, Lillian Browse, Richard Carline, Cyril Connolly, John Davenport, Lady Epstein and Brinsley Ford. Most are in the hand of the researcher and some note the date of the interview.
The file comprises notes about Augustus John and his family, 1968-[1972], from the recollections of those who knew him, including Wogan Phillips, Stuart Piggott, [Hugo] Pitman and 'The story of "Lyric Fantasy and the Blue Lake"' with a copy originally sent to the Tate Gallery in 1963, Reine Pitman, Michaela Pooley, George Rainbird, Sir John Rothenstein, Sacheverell Sitwell, Michel Salaman, Julia Strachey, Mary Taubman, Caitlin Thomas and Dudley Tooth. Most are in the hand of the researcher and some note the date of the interview. -- Also included is a description of the John family home at [28] Mallord Street, Chelsea and of the 'habitués of the Café Royal' in London.
The file comprises a photocopy of the first entry for Augustus John in the fee register of the Faculty of Arts & Laws at The University College, London, 1894-1895, a note of his academic achievements and prizes for 1895-1898, and Ida Margaret Nettleship's entry, 1893; sections from the unpublished autobiography of the Hon. Dorothy Brett; articles relating to the Slade; biographical note on Sir William Orpen, together with a photocopy of a BBC talk 'The Slade School in the nineties' by Ethel Hatch first transmitted on 17 November 1967. -- Also included is an original poster for the campaign 'Desecration of Saint Paul's', [1899], addressed to 'the art students of London', which features as an appendix in the Augustus John biography, and papers relating to the case of Sheila Nansi Ivor-Jones, a student at the Slade, who claimed that she was the illegitimate daughter of Augustus John, including copies of her birth certificate, 1912, and death certificate, 1949.
