Letter from Mir Jafar,$f[1757x1759] /$cMir Jafar, Nawab of Bengal.

Forty boats loaded with sherbet had recently arrived here but by mistake they went back without delivering their cargo. As this sherbet is required here, I will appreciate if they are asked to return. In addition, we would like to have two hundred maunds of candles for our use during the month of Muharram.

Letter from Ramdev,$f[1757x1759] /$cRamdev.

I am glad to know that you are on your way from Murshidabad to Calcutta. I was hoping to see you before you left but I was prevented from doing so because of some unfavourable circumstances. Meanwhile, I am sending today, 21st inst., an instalment of one Lac rupees. I am not neglecting my duty to pay the rest of the amount and God willing I will be paying my dues in regular instalments. For this I will be travelling to Burdwan soon to see the Maharajah Sahib and Diwan Sahib.

Thank you for your letter informing about the opening of the Port and Colonel [Francis] Forde's stay there and his victory at Rajmundhry and the arrival of the French at the port of Conjivaram. The situation here is still the same. The Prince has left Shahjahanabad and is campaigning in Bengal.

Letter from Kora Chand Bose,$f[1757x1759], June 16 /$cKora Chand Bose.

I am writing a detailed account of my experience for your attention. I had come here to pay a visit to Thakur Sahib when I happened to meet the Nawab [Janab-i Ali]. He started questioning me about you again and again and I can hardly repeat some of the questions he asked me about you, particularly about the amount of nazur to be paid. He wanted to honour me with gifts for this but for some reason or other delayed the matter and on the advice of someone he cancelled all agreements he had made with me and moved on. When he had travelled three manzils he dismissed his wife and Miyan Amani from his company. Whatever agreements we had reached he replaced them with some other clauses and in this way destroyed what we had already agreed. -- I have already sent you a detailed report about my activities. He [the Nawab] has collected over one Karor rupees in cash and jewels out of which he wants to deposit only two or three Lacs with me for your use. Two of his men asked why he needed such an expenditure as he is carrying jewels worth twenty five Lacs and seventy Lacs in cash and kind and why I did not accompany them. It is because of this that I have decided to go with them. Please do let me know if you have any objection, as you are my master. Please also let me know if you are willing to receive the representatives of the Rohellas and Afghans and so that we could take control of their states without going to war against them. Nawab Shuja al-Daulah has asked for me a number of times but I have not been able to go see him.

Letter from Nitta Nand,$f[1757x1759 or 1766] /$cNitta Nand.

I hope you have received my report on the activities at the royal court. Raja Muhkam Singh was sitting in his tent on the 15th Dhu al-Qa`dah, when a young men from the army came and killed him with a sword. The assassin ran away and was not caught. After the news of his death spread there was a great commotion in the camp. Sher Jang Bahadur who was angry with Muhakam Singh went to Rukn al-Daulah and told many impolite things about him. Mahfuz Khan and other are very agitated and calling him names. -- After his death, His Majesty has sent a guard to protect his family and has sent them a lot of money. Mahfuz Khan and Basant Rai have been appointed to get four Lacs rupees from the vakil of Haidar Naik

Letter from ?,$f[1757x1759, or 1766].

I have known Sayyid Fath Ali Khan for a number of years and we are close friends. He used to have the jagir of Damarpak with an annual income of sixteen thousand rupees. Now, because of the invasion of the English/ Angrezan his enemies have occupied a number of villages belonging to his state. As the livelihood of his brothers sons and grandsons depends on the income of theses villages it is requested that, with the approval of Mr Masklain/ MacClain [Maskelyne?], I send them to Calcutta so that they can get acquainted with Nawab Shuja al-Mulk Bahadur and he can help them in regaining the possession of their ancestral jagir. It is regretted that because of the uncertain circumstances the Khan himself is unable to accompany them to Calcutta.

Letter from ?'s wife,$f[1757x1759, or 1766].

But fortunately I have found one such handle made of silver in my own collection. This is being sent to you through messengers. I hope this will be acceptable to you.

I have received your letter asking me to recall the army from Katak in order to join the campaign against the Prince. I regard it against good advice.
