The group comprises papers, 1866-1912, relating to the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts (MAFA), established in 1859, of which Whaite was elected president in 1892. The papers include agendas for monthly and annual meetings, letters, accounts statements, press cuttings and miscellaneous papers, including rules and regulations of the Academy, and invitation cards to various exhibitions held by the Society.

The group comprises papers, 1869-1912, relating to the Royal Water Colour Society (RWS), also known as the Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours, of which H. Clarence Whaite was a prominent member, including routine letters and papers relating to meetings of the Society; some statements of accounts; papers relating to exhibitions; press cuttings; regulations, and printed copies of annual reports.
