[See also related papers B279-307.] B351 (46 ff.) was written in July, while travelling through Calais; Antwerp (pictures of Van Dyke and Rubens); Amsterdam; Hague (Holland a dirty country); Brussels; Waterloo (village and battlefield); Liege; Aachen; Cologne, through Rhine Gorge to Frankfurt and Heidelberg. B352 (62 ff.) was written in August on the journey from Strasbourg - Zurich - Lucerne - Interlaken - Geneva to Chamonix. It includes climbing the Rigi and Brienig mountains to see sunset and rise, views of the Eiger Munch and Jungfrau; an avalanche seen at Grindelwald and notes on the number of cases of goitre in Switzerland. B353 (51 ff.) was written in September on the journey through Simplon Pass - Como - Milan - Turin - Lyons - Fontainbleu - Paris - London. It includes further notes on goitre cases, the heat of Northern Italy, Catholic christening and funeral at Milan, the gardens at Fontainbleu and the sights of Paris. B354 is a precis of the three volumes, kept in B351.

B361 (80 ff.) covers the journey through France to Marseilles, on to Genoa and Pisa, to Rome. ff. 20-80 cover the period spent in Rome and includes detailed descriptions of buildings, works of art visited (with some sketches) and notes on Mediterranean vegetation. B362 (f. 26) also covers the period spent in Rome, including Christmas Day, 1850 (ff. 18-20), and seeing the Pope (f. 25).
