A late eighteenth century manuscript in the hand of John Morris containing a collection of 'carolau' and 'cerddi' by Jonathan Hughes, Llangollen, together with a 'cerdd' and a 'carol' by Daniel Jones, and a carol each by Jo[h]n Edw[ard]s (Glyn Cei[rio]g) and Arthur Jones. All the poems by Jonathan Hughes are included in the author's Bardd a Byrddau (y Mwythig, 1778). At the beginning of the volume is 'Bannau yr llyfyr hwn', being a table of titles and first lines, and the numbers of verses, of each carol. Paste-downs on the inside upper and lower covers contain a note and an 'englyn' by D[afydd] M[orris], Llanfair [Caereinion], 1868, etc.

Williams ('Person Llan Aelian yn Rhos'), 'Dai Seion' ('o Gaernarfon'), Mr William Williams [recte Wynn] ('o Langynhafal'), Sion Powel ('o Lansannan'), Edward Richard, [Walter Davies] ('Gwallter Mechain'), Jonathan Hughes, Edward Morris, Lewis Glyn Cothi and David Ellis. The collection was begun probably in 1788.

The 'cywyddau' have been numbered, possibly at a date later than the time of writing, and it appears that several folios are wanting at the beginning. The initials 'P. W.' or 'P. Wm.' sometimes occur at the end of a 'cywydd' near the name of the poet.

A manuscript described as 'Llyfr o hen areithiau a Chywyddau' in the hand of Michael Prichard of Llan Llyfni. It contains poetry, largely in the form of 'cywyddau', by Michael Prichard, Sion Phylipp, Sion Tydur, Rhys Cain, Huw Llwyd Cynfel, Robert ab Howel ab Morgan, William Llyn, Dafydd ab Euan ab Owen, y Rhys ab Ednyfed, Owen Griffith, Thomas Lloyd [recte Prys] (Plas Iolyn), Dafydd Manuel, Wmphrey Dafydd ab Ifan ('Clochydd Llann brenn Mair'), Elis Rowland, Gryffydd ap Llywelyn Fychan, Wiliam Cynwal, Edward ap Rhys, and Thomas Llwyd (Penmen), and anonymous poems; 'Hanes y Twrstan, neu araith S. Tudyr', 'Breuddwyd Sion Tudur', and 'Prognosticasiwn Sion Tydur'; and a mediaeval Welsh glossary ('Llymma bart o'r hen Gymraeg; ar iaith arferedig wrthi') extracted from a book of Thomas Price of Plas Jolyn. The volume was compiled during the period 1726-9. There are a few additions in other hands, among them 'englynion' in praise and in memory of Michael Prichard by William Elias, [Griffith Williams] ('Gutyn Peris'), etc. At the end are two incomplete indexes, the one by Michael Prichard and the other by Owen Williams, Waunfawr. The spine is lettered 'Michael Prichard MS'.

Two volumes entitled 'Llyfr o Hen Ganeuon wedi eu cyfansoddi ers 200 mlynedd. 1900'. The volumes are in the hand of J. H. Davies and contain transcripts, with annotations and collations, of 'carolau', 'cerddi', 'dyrïau', 'englynion' and 'awdlau' from the Welsh School and Cymmrodorion groups of manuscripts in the British Museum Additional Collection (MSS 14866-15089). A manuscript entitled 'Llyfr Ofer Gerddi Margaret Davies 1738', being a collection of 'carolau', 'dyrïau', 'Penillion', and 'englynion' compiled by Margaret Davies (c. 1700-85?), of Coetgae-du, Trawsfynydd, Merioneth. An analysis of the volume ('Bannau'r Llyfr hwn ... by the scribe describes the contents as follows: 'Y Part Cynta or Llyfr sydd O Garolau Maswedd gan mwya. Yna Cerddi ar amryw fesurau Er Gofyn amryw Roddion. Ac yna Dirifau ne ddyriau Mawl merched. Ychydig Alar Gerddi. Amryw fasweddgerdd I ferched Ac ar amryw fesurau. Englynion'. It contains 'cerddi', 'Ymddiddanion', 'carolau', 'dyriau', etc. by Hugh Morris, Humphre Ralph ('Gwas Mr. Richards Person Llanvyllin, 1756), Jonathan Hughes, Edward Rowland, Arthur Jones (1758), Hugh Jones ('o Langwm'), John Richard ('or bryn côch') (poem torn away), John Griffiths (1757), Evan Arthur, William Philip, Gruffudd Phylip, Robert Edward Lewis ('o Gwm Mynach'), Matthew Owen and Rowland Vaughan ('o Gaer-gai, Esquire'), and anonymous poems; 'englynion' and 'cywyddau' by Ed[ward] Morris, Hugh Morris, Moris ap Robert ('o'r Bala'), Hugh Llyn and Jonathan Hughes; and a prayer entitled 'Gweddi cyn mynd i Gysgu ... A manuscript in a number of seventeenth century hands, with some eighteenth century additions, containing 'cywyddau' and 'englynion' (of which several are addressed to the family of Wynn of Foelas, Ysbyty, Denbighshire) by Robin Ddu, Rys Kin [Cain], Ifan (Ieuan) Llafar, Edward Brynllys, Rees ap Robert, Rhisiartt (Richard) Kynnwal, Sion Tvdvr (Tuder), Owain Gwynedd, Howell ap Syr Mathew, Thomas Prys, etc.; 'tribannau' and 'penillion' by Ievan Griffith otherwise Y Tailiwr Llawen (1662), Rd. Edwards, etc.; 'The Gipsies Paraphrase found in the Eaves of an house in Shropshire ... 1616 and kept since by the Lord Lumley'; prophecies, in English, concerning the Civil War, etc.; a list of animal charges on armorial shields; 'Prophwydolieth Dewi; and 'Penillion' entitled 'Datcaniad i Mr. Dauidd Lloyd o flaunyddol'. There is at the beginning a descriptive note on the manuscript and a detailed list of contents in a nineteenth century hand. Among the insets are the certificate, 1885, of the purchase by George T. Jones from his mother-in-law Catherine Evans for a sum of 10s. 6d. of manuscripts belonging to his late father-in-law; an undated letter from J[ohn] Jones ['Myrddin Fardd'], Chwilog, to [J. H.] Davies (the return of a manuscript, a payment by Mr. O'Brien Owen of Caernarfon); and a pencilled note by J. H. Davies describing the manuscript as 'Llyfr Thomas Roberts 1677'.

According to a note at the end of the transcript, one transcript by H[ugh[ B[rython] H[ughes] was sent for publication in Yr Haul in 1874 (see Yr Haul, 1874, pp. 427-8). A note on page 406 refers to a transcript made by Thomas Miles ('Gwas Arglwyddes Llanover') for D. Silvan Evans in September 1882. The spine of each volume is lettered 'Manion Cof a Chadw', with the appropriate volume number.

Letters and miscellaneous papers comprising two letters [+], 1693, from Ch[arles] Owen, Oswestree to the Lady Archer near Epping in Essex (acknowledging all the expressions of her ladyship's extraordinary favours to him, mentioning that after a tedious ramble and censorious suspicions he came home in safety, the liberality of friends, 'Yet all this will not do for a Compensation for the injury done me', he desired his brother to assist Mr (?) Durrant in adjusting those wretched differences at Epping - her Ladyship's honourable attempts towards it); seven letters [+] from T[homas] Burgess, successively bishop of St Davids and of Salisbury, one written from C[orpus] C[hristi] C[ollege], Oxford, 1787, to T[homas] Falconer, Esq'r, Chester (thanking him for the present of his little book, requesting the addressee's opinion on the meaning of a passage from the Gospels and quoting from the preface to a second edition of the [Salisbury] spelling-book), two, possibly three, written from Abergwilly Palace and London, 1813-14, to the Reverend T. W. [recte T. D.] Fosbrooke, Walford, near Ross (commending the addressee's intention of publishing a 'cheap comment' on the New Testament, he seems to have taken up a very wrong conception of the Bible Society) and three written from Salisbury, 1831, to Mr Strong, bookseller, Bristol (instructions re books, was very sorry to see that the addressee has been a sufferer by the late disastrous events at Bristol); a copy of an engraved portrait of the Right Reverend Thomas Burgess, DD, Lord Bishop of Salisbury; a letter, year not given, from Joseph D[?ownes], Builth to [John Dix] (acknowledging the addressee's most welcome letter belying his wife's guesses, the indirect source of the addressee's recovery from misfortune if not illness, his own writing, mention of Edinburgh, etc.); a note, 1811, from Mr Pennant, Downing to a Mrs Williams (complying with her request on behalf of Hugh Shone and his aged wife); a list by J. H. Davies headed 'Myrddin MSS (1) Eben Fardd'; and a bundle of miscellaneous papers [#] including 'Eifionydd', a holograph poem in Welsh by E[benezer] Thomas ('Eben Fardd'), Clynnog, 22 July 1829; 'Myfyrdawd y Bardd am ei gariad pan oedd hi yn mordwo o Ynys Fôn i Fanaw' by Rhobt Huws ('Rhobin ddu o Fôn'); one or two items probably in the autograph of the Reverend Peter Bailey Williams (English verse, a draft of a letter [to the editors of the Welsh Magazine], etc.), 'An Infentory of Coods & Cattells of Mr Morgan ap Ragnard ap Maddocke of te County of Clamorganshire shentilman ...', endorsed 'The Welch Inventory', and miscellaneous documents, 1588-1767, including a bond, 1588, relating to properties within the township of Llanvair in the commot of Iscor', Caernarfonshire, a citation, 1652, relating to the administration of the goods of Richard Thomas [? of Talgarth, Breconshire], a grant, 1734, relating to Bryn y Fedwen estate in the parish of Llanrug, Caernarfonshire, and a return, 1767, by Edward Watkins, curate, certifying that there are no Papists within his parish of Llangaffo or Llangeinwen, Anglesey. The items marked + were formerly Phillipps MS 35051 (see letter dated 9 February 1973 from Dr A. N. L. Munby to the Keeper of Manuscripts, National Library of Wales). # - The wrapping paper has on it 'Phillipps MSS 34929' in pencil in the autograph of J. H. Davies but, with the exception of the 'inventory of goods', the contents of this package do not appear to correspond to the description of Phillipps MS 34929 as given by Dr Munby in his letter, although Phillipps MS 34929 was purchased by J. H. Davies.

Miscellaneous papers, including an extract 'From the Mabinogion of Lady Guest' [cf. The Mabinogion ... translated with notes, by Lady Charlotte Guest (London, 1877), pp. 74-6], a list of early Welsh books (in the autograph of [Thomas Edward Ellis], an extract from Kinmel MS 76 [NLW MS 1576] relating to Thomas Lloyd of Penmaen, and a bibliography entitled '"Y Bardd Cwsc" by Elis Wyn o Lasynys' [cf. The Journal of the Welsh Bibliographical Society, Vol. IV, pp. 199-208]. There are also a number of blue wrappers from past issues of 'Beibl Peter Williams' (1770) and the Welsh edition of Cann's Bible (1790) with printed proposals, Trefecca, 1786, relating to the latter, and part of a notebook (eighteenth century), which belonged to David Jones of Bryn y Rhig near Dolgelly and others, containing a few 'englynion', etc.

Twenty-eight holograph letters and a fragment of another, 1728-1764, of the Morrises of Anglesey and their circle, the correspondents being Rhist. Morys, London (4), Llywelin Deheubarth (1), Edward Hughes, Aberystwyth and Gallt Vadog (5), Lewis Morris, London and Galltvadog (10), [Goronwy Owen] 'Gronwy Ddu', Llundain (1), Margt. Owen, Pentrerianell (5), Wm Morris, Caer Gybi Sant (1), an unnamed correspondent, Llanvayr Clwydogau (1), and Richd. Morris, Rhydyraderyn (1). All these letters have been published except possibly that of Rich[ar]d Morris, Rhydyraderyn (1764), and a chronological list with references has now been inserted in the volume. Most of the letters have been published in Additional Letters of the Morrises of Anglesey (1735-1786), ed. Hugh Owen (Y Cymmrodor, Vol. XLIX, Part II (1949). They are followed by copies of letters written to [Hugh Hughes] Hugh ap Hugh, Llwydiarth Esgob by John Thomas [d. 1769], Bangor and Bewmaris [sic], 1764-7 (3), and Rhist. Morys, Llundain, 1760-70 (4, one possibly holograph). At the end of the volume are items of verse by various authors, including S. W., Owen Gruffydd, John Roderick, Sion Onest, 1736, Hugh Morris, Ellis Cadwaladr and Evan Williams 'Telynior yn Llundain' (a translation of 'Lovely Peggy').
