The writer informs the archbishop that the clergy of the said shire, having been summoned 'to shewe their armour before the Lieutennantes of the cou[ntie] . . ., and their men to be mustred', were very perplexed, not 'knowing how to satisfy this comaund, for that they neuer were yett rated at any armour, but only once, viz., some 13 yeares since'. If they were rated as highly on the present as on the previous occasion, owing to their poverty, they would not be able to meet the demands made upon them without suffering great hardship.
