Journal of a tour of the USA,

Diary, 28 May 1827-24 Feb. 1828, of a tour of the USA, commencing "Landed from the Hannibal and breakfasted at Niblo's" [in New York], and including Philadelphia, Schenectady, Canandaigua, Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Prescott, Cornwall, Montreal, Quebec, Cap Tourmente ['Cape Tourmont'], Salem, Savannah, Charleston, Montgomery, the Creek Nation, Mobile, and New Orleans. Includes several references to buying cotton; also references to the treatment of slaves and Indians. The writer is not identified, but writes "I am this day 20 years of age - hope that another year will find me increased in wisdom & virtue" (27 Aug. 1827). Inside front cover initialled in pencil, 'J. C. M.'

Morrall angler's pocketbook,

Volume comprising a wallet with pockets inside the covers, enclosing a booklet of rough paper. The booklet contains feathers for tying flies, and a green pea recipe for carp bait. Wallet cover inscribed 'Cha's Morrall, Chester'; bookplate on the inside front cover, inscribed 'E. Morrall, Liverpool'. Booklet cover inscribed '(Game)'. An envelope printed 'G. Higham of Oswestry and Welshpool, gun, fishing rod and tackle manufacturer' found loose in the collection, containing a no. 4 Sneck hook has been added to the pocketbook.

Morrall estate map book,

An estate map-book intitled "Several messuages & lands within the manor or lordship of Trayan in the several townships of Dudleston parish of Ellesmere, Ifton Rhyn Weston Rhyn & Bronygarth in the parish of Saint Martin's in the county of Salop, the property of Edward Morrall esq're, copied from a survey made in 1820, by O. D. Owen in 1823".

Account book,

Professional account, Dec. 1814-Dec. 1818, including household entries (washing, butcher etc.); some entries, Dec. 1814-Aug. 1816, are wasted on being forwarded to no. 448. Also household account intitled 'Private account commencing June 1 1819 up to which time it is entered in the common cash book', June 1819-June 1828; and 'RM's yearly expenditure, arranged under different headings', including butcher's meat, groceries, rents etc., servants' wages, and journeys etc., mainly for 1834 only, but some carried on to 1838.

Morrall estate rental,

Half-yearly rentals, Christmas 1810-Christmas 1813 and Lady Day 1813-Lady Day 1824. The location of the properties is not given. Front flyleaf inscribed, that the volume was exhibited in a cause in Chancery of Jones v. Morrall, 1848.

Miscellaneous loose family papers, including rough pedigrees and notes relating to the Bee family (1603-1706) of New Sarum, co. Wilts, "our grandmother family", [early 19 cent.]; a commission to Charles Morrall, esq., as deputy-lieutenant of co. Shrop., 1803; commission to Robert Morrall of Stockport, co. Ches., gent., to take affadavits in co's Ches., Lancs, York, Derby and Shrop., 1810; a clean bill of health issued in Alicante, Spain, to Thomas Morrall, 1810; pedigree of the Morrall family "under which John Morrall of Brasen-nose College, Oxford, obtained his Port Fellowship, 1818; recorded in the Heralds College, Lib. Arundel; NB the claimant for this fellowship must be born in the county or city of Chester", (1817 watermark; much repaired); a study ticket from M. Dubois Drabonnet to M'me Smith, to enter the Louvre and Luxembourg museums, 1821; an admonitory letter from J. Morrall (later Rev. John) to his brother Ned (Edward Morrall), 18 years his senior, 1824; copy of John Jones's petition to Parliament through General Mytton re. the tenure of lands in Wales (1828 watermark); a copy of a letter from Cyrus Morrall to Adam Lodge repudiating accusations of having spent some hundreds of pounds on his pedigree, 1835, on the back of a printed reference from the churchwardens recommending Rev. Cyrus Morrall to the vacant ministry of Liverpool St Michaels, 1834; a Christmas letter from James Guthrie of Dundee, Scotland, to his cousins in Carnoustie, 1834; four Morrall family letters, 1836-1847; inventories of silverware and settled furniture, portraits etc., 1839-1888; two letters from John Jones of St Servan, France, to Edward Morrall, relating to the consanguinity of their families, Edwards of Cilhendre and Rorington, 1853-1854; account of the marriage of Cyrus Morrall and Anne Kinloch Lingard Guthrie at St Pauls Episcopal Church, Dundee, 1885; and death certificate of Rev. John Peak of Ellesmere Vicarage, 1896.

Miscellaneous loose financial papers, including Land Tax redemption certificates, for William Challnor's m's and lands in the Chapel division, 1798, and for Charles Morrall of Chester's m's and lands in the Chapel and Pentrecoed divisions, 1799, all t. Dudleston; Inland Revenue succession duty papers relating to Rev. Cyrus Morrall (d. 30 May 1882), Rev. John Morrall (d. 22 March 1886) and Cyrus Morrall (d. 13 April 1912); insurance policies, 1897-1941; file of receipts etc. for repairs and improvements to Plas Yolyn, 1912; and sale catalogue (inscribed 'Kilhendre') for a Plas Yolyn herd of 74 Friesian dairy cattle, 1974.

Loose maps, plans and prints, including three coloured prints, of 'Guardia nobile', 'Ufficiale della Guardia Svizzera', and 'Soldato Svizzero in gran tenuta' by Guis'e Mochetti, [19 cent.]; a copy of Speed's map of Shropshire, extracted from a volume, [19 cent.]; plans 1-2 from the Plas Yolyn estate sale, 1920; OS 6-inch 2nd ed. Shropshire sheet V NE, 1902, marked with the lands referred to in a lease of 1920; and OS 6-inch map [?showing the lands to be sold (blue) and (retained)].

Commonplace book,

Volume containing memoranda relating to gardening (gooseberries, vines, strawberries, fruit trees, melons etc.), building (exterior wash, rough cast, slates), workmen's wages, destroying vermin, gout, diseases in cattle, horses, dogs, sheep, fishing, poultry, surveying, charcoal, oxen etc. etc. The few dates mentioned in the text cover 1794-1814. At the rear of the volume is a family memorandum, 1794 (pp. [176-8]). Includes many inserted items, the few dated items covering 1774-1850.

Manor of Stretton en le Dale, co. Shrop.,

Original bundle of papers mainly relating to the manor of Stretton en le Dale, including copy admittances and surrenders (11) in the manor of Stretton en le Dale, 1770-1823; notes of judgments in Morrall v. Sutton relating to leaseholds granted for life by the will of Edward Lloyd, 1841-1842; office copy of the will (1789, proved 1790) of Edward Lloyd, esq., (1839 watermark); abstract of subsequent title (1838-1839) to personal property bequeathed by Edward Lloyd's will, (1836 watermark); abstract of title (1770-1848) of Edward Morrall, esq., to a copyhold estate at Church Stretton, 1849, and schedule of title deeds (1770-1849) to the same, 1849; articles of agreement between Edward Morrall of Plas Warren, esq., and Henry Evans, master of Church Stretton workhouse, for the sale of a parcel of copyhold land near Church Stretton called Hales Close (3a.), and a patch of land (33p.) in a parcel of copyhold land called Staniel, both in the manor of Stretton en le Dale, 1853; conditions of sale and receipts for the payment of deposits of lots 6-8 of a copyhold estate at Church Stretton sold by auction, 1853, and deeds of covenant for the production of deeds etc. after the same auction, 1854.

John Guthrie's letter book,

Letter book containing letters and invoices relating to linen shipped from Dundee to merchants in London to sell on behalf of John Guthrie, 1768-1774. Spine inscribed 'Lett'r book no. II', although one 'I' has been erased to create 'no. I'. Enclosed loose, (i) a certificate from Theodore Charles Mozard, resident French consul at Boston for New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut, that Samuel Barrett is a notary public at Boston, 5 Germinal 6 [=25 March 1798]; and (ii) a printed 'Summary view of statistical returns for the year ending June 30, 1896. Diocese of Brechin', of numbers for the congregations, baptisms, marriages, burials, confirmations, school attendances etc. for each parish.

Hanmer estate rental,

Settled accounts intitled 'Francis Wardle's account with Mrs Hanmer as guardian to Miss Hanmer', June 1754-Dec. 1756; William Dix's account with Assheton Curzon, esq., for half yearly rents, Michaelmas 1756, and disbursements, June-Dec. 1756; and William Challnor's account with Assheton Curzon, esq., for half yearly rents, Michaelmas 1756-Lady Day 1800, the properties including a Brewers Hall estate, and receipts and disbursements, June 1756-Jan. 1801.

Jennings deeds,

Deeds arising from the marriage settlement (1738) of Roger Jennings of Soddyll, co. Shrop., esq., and Margaret Chambre, spinster, sister of John Chambre, gent., relating to properties in Dudleston.

Edwards rental and accounts,

Volume of rentals, including of properties in St Martins, Techell, Dudleston, Cheshire, Iscoed, Bronington, Hanmer and Birmingham, Lady Day 1751-Lady Day 1781. Accounts of interest received on money at interest is included from Lady Day 1762. From the other end of the volume are disbursement accounts, May 1748-June 1774, including annual accounts headed 'Mrs Ann Edwards by ye will & deeds of her sister Mrs Frances Edwards is charg'd with ye payment of ten pounds yearly towards ye support of a charity school founded & endow'd by her s'd suster in Dudleston & for other uses therein mention'd & underneath particularized issuing out of ye rents & proffits of a tenement called Great Farm now in ye occupation of Jane Powel' (or similar), 1748-1751.

Bee estate rental,

Account headed '12th account. Money received for Mrs Eliza Bee by Arth'r Tiler, from Lady day 1736 to Lady day 1738', with rents received in respect of Black Friars, Lambeth, Country, Rupert Street, and Ground rents. The back cover is inscribed 'Bee. Account of rents of estates of John Bee esq'. Enclosed is a rent roll and arrears (torn) of Mrs Eliz' Bee's tenants as they stood at Michaelmas 1735, under the headings Black Friars, Lambeth Marsh, Rupert Street, Salisbury, Stockbridge, Silson, Wendelbury, and Russell Court ground rents.

William Challnor and Frances Morrall marriage settlement,

Original bundle of deeds, comprising a lease and release by Ann Edwards of Cilhendre, co. Shrop., spinster, to George Glover of the city of Chester, apothecary, of her m's and lands in p. St Martins, in trust, 1742; and a lease and release, being the marriage settlement of William Challnor of Iscoed, co. Flint, gent., and Frances Morrall of Cilhendre, spinster, of her m. and lands in p. St Martins in the occ. of Robert Roberts, 1743. Original wrapper inscribed 'Title deeds relating to an estate in the parish of St Martins late in the holding of Jno Roberts'.

Miscellaneous loose family papers, including draft articles of agreement for the division of the Marshamley estate between Thomas Churton of Marshamley, yeoman, Ralph Churton of [Ightfield?], his brother, yeoman, Edward [Chesus?] of Hodnett, grocer, and Sarah his wife, all co. Shrop., and Alice Meare of Malpas, co. Ches, widow, 1713; letter from J'n Bridgeman to her aunt, Mrs Edwards of Cilhendre, 1730, relating to a chalice given to Mr Sharratt under the terms of a will; a letter from John Ellis of Wrexham to Mr Challnor of Cilhendre, including "I am desired by Sist'r Morrall to acquaint you y't she ... desires ye favour of you to meet her here on thursday next to put an end to affairs depending betwixt you", 1748; a copy of a character sketch of Mr Hastings of Woodlands, [earl of Shaftesbury (1621-1683), ?from Leonard Howard's 'Collection of letters and state papers' (1753)], [1776x1800?]; certificate of Thomas Sackville Curteis, to be presented to the vicarage of Sevenoaks, co. Kent, 1777; and a home-made copy of the caricature "Cestina Warehouse or Belly Piece Shop", the original, dated 1793, attributed to Isaac Cruikshank [British Museum Satires 8387; Krumbhaar 141], with on the reverse a caricature of "Dr Slop - Easer of Belly Pieces".

Lease for 21 years by John Bee of Shrewsbury, esq., to Samuel Haile of Silverston, co. Northants, laceman, of four parcels of inclosed land (12a.) and several parcels of land (60a.) dispersed in the open and common fields, all in p. or t. Silverston, co. Southampton [recte Northampton], 1722; lease for 21 years ('from the first of may new style next ensuing') by Charles Morrall of Chester, surgeon, to Thomas Jones of Dudleston, yeoman, of a m. and tmt lately occ. by the said Thomas Jones and which is hereby surrendered, and a m. or tmt called Kyah, both t. Dudleston, and several parcels of ground (named) belonging therewith, 1786 (schedule of Kyah and Jones's tenements (76a.) inscribed on the back of the lease); lease for 21 years by the dean and chapter of Bristol to Ellen Sutton of Shrewsbury, widow, of the tithes of h.
