Is concerned about the reply to be sent to the Central Welsh Board in the Colwyn Bay case. Discusses the case in detail. Hopes to discuss it further with John Herbert Lewis after the recess.
The Licensing Bill Committee stage has been completed. The Monmouthshire amendment was not passed. Lord Plymouth made a very strong speech against the extension of Sunday closing to Monmouthshire. Is anxious for the Government to go to a division. Has John Herbert Lewis any influence in the Lords? The issue 'has a serious relation to the political situation in Wales'. A referendum would be 'ridiculous'. A 'stiff fight on this point' is needed. 'Private & confidential'.
Congratulations on honour received. Hears John Herbert Lewis was offered a peerage. Has been ill and so could not stand at the last general election - 'What a revolution that Election has created in the world of politics'. His health and future prospects. His wife and daughter. John Herbert Lewis's children. Hears John Herbert Lewis is to receive the freedom of the town of Aberystwyth. 'Honours come your way in clusters. It never rains but it pours'.
Hopes that John Herbert Lewis is not in pain and is able to find some interest in life. Fears education is to suffer a further setback. Is grieved by the proposed abolition of percentage grants which will lead to 'reaction'. There is widespread concern at the 'disarray and discouragement' at the Board of Education. Is writing a biography of Bryce. Reflections on the Education Bill of 1902. 'The poor Liberal party! I cannot say that it is very exhilerating sitting amongst them in Parliament - so few and yet so divided - but I am bound to say that all the best initiatives of the Government began from the Liberal Benches'. Is not impressed by Lloyd George's land scheme and tends to agree with Mond - 'Why should the land be better cultivated under a committee aided by land agents than under landlords aided by land agents?'.
Would like John Herbert Lewis's advice on transferring water-colour drawings and wax models to the care of the National Museum of Wales or to the University.
Thanks for letter of good wishes. Has now spent four weeks at the United Theological College which he faced 'with much fear & trembling'. Is glad John Herbert Lewis is well in spite of his invalidity.
The affairs of the Flintshire Historical Society - the publication of the Journal, changes in committees, finances. Kindly references were made to John Herbert Lewis. The death of Henry Taylor.
Thanks for congratulations on adoption as Liberal prospective parliamentary candidate for Flintshire. Anticipates victory in the election. Was at first reluctant to stand but is now determined to win back the seat. Plans to go to Warsaw to the International Law Association Conference.
Thanks for donation to the library. Has received a favourable account of John Herbert Lewis's health from Dr Jones Parry. The school re-opened a fortnight ago with 30 pupils. One former pupil has been awarded the Peace Scholarship on entering Aberystwyth; gives an account of his career, which is proof of the value of adult schools. Welsh.
Christmas greetings from an old servant. John Herbert Lewis, 'by being trustworthy and honourable in both public and private life', has earned widespread respect. Has just read Dr Jacks's Constructive Citizenship.
Had hoped to visit John Herbert Lewis by now. When he retires none of the MPs from 1906 will be left in the Commons except for Lloyd George. 'The Party now meets in his room, & you will appreciate the irony of the situation when I say that the last meeting I attended consisted of Mr Lloyd George, Mr Hopkin Morris & myself!' JB hopes to return to the House as Member for Battersea.
Thanks for letter and telegram of congratulations. 'I am keenly sensible of your part in bringing this about. Again & again accept my heartfelt thanks'. Is coming to London today.
Thanks for congratulations on election victory. The campaign in Anglesey was very long, but it gave her an opportunity of 'overcoming the prejudice of the farmers against a woman candidate ... a formidable obstacle'. There was a 'rather unpleasant incident in the adoption meeting', and rumours of an independent candidate.
Thanks for letter of congratulation, particularly welcome from 'one who has occupied this office, to which I am now appointed, for seven years'. Will call on John Herbert Lewis one day.
Thanks for messages of encouragement and congratulation. Regards John Herbert Lewis as 'a very old & valued friend of Father's'. The campaign proved to be 'rather strenuous for a beginner'.
Thanks for letter. Is distressed to learn of John Herbert Lewis's accident and its consequences. Always recalls John Herbert Lewis with regard and respect. His wife is suffering from the effects of a carriage accident ten years ago.
