A notebook in the hand of J. H. Davies containing a bibliography of eighteenth and nineteenth century Welsh chap-books and of 'Llythyrau Elis y Cowper', the latter being publications by Ellis Roberts (d. 1789) incorporating the word 'Llythyr' (Letter) in the title.

A notebook in the hand of J. H. Davies containing a thumb-nail 'Glossary to Names of Persons and Places' in two volumes of the poetry of Tudur Aled (see Cwrtmawr MSS 154-5).

Notes on Morgan Llwyd, etc.,

A notebook in the hand of Thomas Edward Ellis (1859-99) containing notes and extracts mainly relating to Morgan Llwyd (1619-59) and the religious background of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, probably compiled in connection with the preparation of Gweithiau Morgan Llwyd o Wynedd, ed. Thomas E. Ellis (Bangor and London, 1899). The second volume of Gweithiau Morgan Llwyd o Wynedd was published in 1908 and edited by J. H. Davies, who states (p.v) that T. E. Ellis had left a large number of disconnected notes which he had found very useful in preparing his work.

Medicine and astrology,

A composite volume belonging to, and partly in the hand of, John Harries (1787-1839), astrologer and medical practitioner, of Pant-coy, Cwrtycadno, Carmarthenshire. It contains transcripts of a medical treatise on 'Galvanism' and of a series of astrological texts ('Of the Figure of the World', 'Monthly Observations', 'Of the judgment of Eclipses', etc.), and extracts from 'Sibly's Astrology' [i.e. Ebenezer Sibly, A new and complete illustration of the Celestial Science of Astrology].

A notebook in the hand of J. H. Davies containing titles of printed books, including works published by S. Williams, Aberystwyth, hymn-books in the Trefecca library, etc. The volume was subsequently used by J. H. Davies to record a few memoranda relating to an inquiry into the problem of the pollution of the river Teifi, 1917.

Gwaith Jonathan Hughes,

A notebook in the hand of J. H. Davies containing a thumb-nail alphabetical index of first lines of the poetry of Jonathan Hughes (1721-1805), Llangollen, taken almost entirely from the poet's Bardd a Byrddau (Mwythig, 1778).

University of Wales reprints minute book,

A minute book (with a few insets and press cuttings) of the Reprints Sub-Committee of the Literature Section of the Guild of Graduates of the University of Wales. The volume is successively in the hand of John Edward Lloyd (1861-1947), Bangor, 15 May 1897 - 13 January 1898, and of J. H. Davies, 18 April 1900 - 13 November 1902 and 11 December 1908.

Gramadeg Groeg, etc.,

A manuscript in the hand of Richard Robert Jones ('Dic Aberdaron; 1780-1843) containing a Greek grammar entitled 'Egwyddorion Grammadeg Groeg' compiled in 1836 from the grammar of Thomas Stackhouse [i.e. Graecae Grammatices Rudimenta, 1762] and others. Tipped into the volume at the end are The Royal Prophetic Annual, 1837, and a sheet containing an illustration of a harp, with explanatory notes in Greek, and on the dorse is a Hebrew text.

Cyfrifon Cofiant David Rees,

An account book of the Reverend J. M. Griffiths, Goginan, Cardiganshire almost entirely containing particulars of sales of his book Cofiant a Dywediadau ... David Rees (Dolgellau, 1910). Inset is a letter from Evan Daniel, Holborn Circus, London to J. M. Griffiths, 1910 (ordering a copy of the Cofiant).

Davies containing extracts from a copy [in the British Museum] of 'Sebright's Catalogue 1807', i.e. Catalogue of the Duplicates and a considerable portion of the library of Sir John Sebright Bart. (of Beechwood, Herts), also the very curious collection of MSS of ancient chronicles, Monastic History, Charters etc. ... Collected by Sir Roger Twysden and Mr E. Lhwyd, sold by Leigh and S. Sotheby, on Monday, April 6th, 1807 ...; and transcripts of poetry and memoranda largely from Welsh manuscripts in the British Museum.

H. Morysiaid Môn,

A writing pad in the hand of J. H. Davies containing a chronological list of letters of the Morris brothers ('Morysiaid Môn) together with some relevant biographical notes and pedigrees.

Ffrwdfâl manuscript,

A notebook of William Davies (1805-59), Independent minister and schoolmaster of Froodvale (Ffrwdfâl), Cynwyl Gaeo, Carmarthenshire, etc. The volume is bound in brown paper and entitled on the upper cover: 'Liber Poeseos. Composed by Wm Davies at Carnsullom in Cornwall. Scriptum Feb 8th 1831'. With the exception of a series of five 'tribannau', without a title, all the poems are in English, and an indication of their general theme may be gathered from the following titles: 'Loss of friends', 'Creation', 'Providence', 'Goodness of God', 'The Benefit of the Gospel', 'Shortness of life', 'Sufferings of Christ', 'Death of Martyrs', 'The Bible', etc. Most of the poems are dated within the period 22 February 1831-21 August 1832 and the majority are likewise subscribed 'W. D.' or 'W. D. Fecit'. An entry on the inside upper cover reads as follows: '1831. I W. D. started from Loftycyff July 6th, was at Bristol July 9th, at Exeter July 13, at Coverack July 16th'.

Britannicarum Ecclesiarvm Antiqvitates ...,

A copy of James Ussher (Archbishop of Armagh), Britannicarum Ecclesiarvm Antiqvitates... (Dublinii, 1639), wrth copious marginal and other annotations and a short index (4pp.) in a contemporary hand. The title page bears the following inscriptions: 'Prima Editio in mari Baltico Periit. Hunc librum ex Hibernia Transmisit D.Joh. Sharpius Prothonotarius ibidem' and 'Gulielmi Higgini P (?) A D D[ono] D[edit] V[ir] Cl[aerissimus] Carolus Twisdenus Legum Dr. Cancellarius Covent. et Lich. Diocesseos 1639'. William Higgins (ob. 1666) was canon, 1633, and precentor, 1636, of Lichfield, rector of Stoke-upon-Teme, 1639-66, and archdeacon of Derby, 1641-66.

Minute book of Cymmrodorion Society in Powys, etc.

A minute book of the Cymmrodorion Society in Powys (established 6 October 1819), 1819-1820, together with a list of members, 1819-1822. The volume was subsequently used by Mary Richards, Darowen, and, to a lesser extent, by Thomas R. Williams, Bryn Tanad, Llanerfyl, to record transcripts of a list of British kings to George III ('Tabl o holl Frenhinodd Prydain or dechreiad Cyntaf hyd ein Brenin George y IIII) from the Almanac of Thomas Jones, Shrewsbury, 1709; poetry in strict and free metres by E[dward] J[ones] (Periglor Caer Einion) (1875), [Hugh Parry] (Cefni) (Utica, N.Y.) (1872), [Morris Jones] (Meurig Idris), John Blackwell [Alun], [Robert Parry] (Robin Ddu [Eryri]), John Edwar[d] Davies (New York, a native of Llan Erful), etc.; englynion submitted for competition at the Cymmrodorion Society in Powys eisteddfod at Wrexham, 1820, by W. Williams (Llandofry), Peter Jones (Liverpool), etc.; 'At y Cymry', being an appeal to Welshmen to protest against the oppression of Protestants in Ireland (printed [?or written] by James Davies, printer, Holywell), letters from Hugh Jones (Erfyl), Caer Lleon to D[avid] Richard[s], [Llansilin], 1820 (the appointment of addressee as secretary of the Cymmrodorion Society in Powys, submission of compositions to the forthcoming eisteddfod), J. Blackwell, Wyddgrug to D[avid] Richard[s], Llansilin, undated [1820] (enclosing poetry), T[homas] Price (Carnhuanawc), Crickhowel to Tho[ma]s Richards, Llangynyw, 1833 (measures for the preservation of the Welsh language) (fragments of the original letter in Cwrtmawr MS 1045), and Geor[ge] Morris, Wrexham to D[avid] Richards, Llansilin, 1822 (payment for windows broken during the eisteddfod); lists of poets, harpists and singers, with particulars of distances of their respective homes [from Wrexham]; a list of Caernarvonshire poets ('Cofrestr o Fardd Caer Arfon'); a list of licences awarded to ovates, etc., at the Gorsedd of Bards at Llangynyw, 1845; a prospectus of Y Dywysogaeth, 1870; 'The Araingment of the Queen of Scotts in Hoderingham Castell in the County of Northamton the VIII of February 1586' (cf. Cwrtmawr MS870); etc. Mounted on the inside lower cover are undated accounts of the Cymmrodorion Society in Powys.

Enwogion Sir Gaernarfon ...,

A volume (511 pp.) containing 'Enwogion Sir Gaernarfon ... gan Ymchwiliwr' ['sef John Jones (Myrddin Fardd)' added in another hand], a prize-winning entry at the Caernarfon National Eisteddfod, 1877; it is fuller than the published work bearing the same title. Inserts include a letter, 29 January 1806, from D[avid] T[homas] ('Dafydd Ddu Eryri'), Waunfawr to ?[David Owen ('Dewi Wyn o Eifion')] (the illness and death of the writer's brother, Humphrey [Thomas]), a letter, 1905, from [the Reverend] E[van] Evans, Llansadwrn Rectory, Menai Bridge to ['Myrddin Fardd'] (names of subscribers to Cynfeirdd Lleyn), a copy by 'Glynn' of the inscription on the (?) tombstone of the Reverend J. H. Hughes ('Ieuan o Leyn'), a letter, year not given, from [the Reverend] D. Roberts, Llanelidan Rectory, Ruthin to John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') (replying to a query concerning his father, the late Reverend William Roberts, rector of Llanddeiniolen), and a number of press cuttings, etc. There are also some sheets (161-173 and 329) from a later manuscript version of 'Enwogion Sir Gaernarfon' and a transcript by [W. H. Roberts ('Iseifion')] of a note by 'Myrddin Fardd' on David Williams, MP, JP, DL ('Dewi Heli') (see Cwrtmawr MS 932D).
