An imperfect volume of Welsh poetry and Welsh translations of poetry by, and largely in the hand of, the Reverend John Myrddin Thomas (1838-1914), a native of Felin-wen, Abergwili, Carmarthenshire and Independent minister successively at Abersychan (1858-62), Newport (1862-6), Monmouthshire, Mold and Sychtyn (1866-72), Llong (1866-82) and Pontybodkin (1868-82), Flintshire. The volume was acquired on 25 October 1856 and much of the poetry is dated within the period 1856-?87. In many instances there are copious revisions by the author with a view to publication. Among the titles are 'Deigryn ar fedd fy ewythr yr hwn a huna yn monwent bruddaidd Abergwili', 'Can i ddyffryn Tywi', 'Laura Annie. Merch Morgan John Ysw Pontypool', Galareb i D. W. Evans B.A. Athraw Ysgol y Tabernacl Caerfyrddin', 'Baban newydd eni Mr Evan Jones Contractor Abersychan a'i briod', 'I'w osod ar fedd Dd Morgan Twynyffrwd Abersychan', 'Englyn i'w osod ar feddfaen gwraig y Parch. Thomas Morgan Noddfa Abersychan', and 'Englyn yn ymholi am ansawdd iechyd Emily Gwenfrewi Merch fach William Howell Town Lock Casnewydd'. On the flyleaf and on the inner lower cover the author has recorded brief particulars of his educational and ministerial career, and among the insets are a few additional poems and a letter to J. Myrddin Thomas from T[homas] Johns ('Taborfryn'), Llanelli, 1886 (thanks for contribution to Tywysydd [y Plant], a personal tribute to the recipient and his family at Felinwen and a reference to an estrangement following the 'dadl Falayddol' [Bala College controversy]).

A manuscript containing an alphabetical list of poets and authors (most with abbreviations for the names and floruits appended) and literary and historical works (e.g. Brut y Tywysogion, Buchedd St Margaret); a list of Welsh proverbs, all starting with 'ni' or 'nid'; poetry, nearly all in the form of 'englynion', mainly by Owen Gruffydd 'o blwy Llanystynd[wy]' and Absalom Roberts of Llanrwst, with a few 'englynion' by John Prichard Prys, Edward Morus, Ellis Rolant, Sion Dafydd and anonymous; on the last page (24) there are epitaphs in verse to Anne and Cathrin Roberts of Goppa, who died in 1780.

Added to 'Pennillion i annerch Cymdeithas y Cymraegyddion yn 'Llundain. Y dôn yw blodau'r dyffryn' by Edward Charles is the following postscript, - 'Gresyn na fyddai beirdd Cymry yn 'r oes hon yn canu ar yr hên Geingciau cymreig fel y pennillion hyn: mae'nt hwyth[a]u yn barddoni y rhan fynycha, a'r ryw Geingciau seisnig, yr hyn sydd hollol anghyttun a pheroriaeth y Cymro'. On one of the fly-leaves is an imperfect list of correspondents in the hand of John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'), with additions in the hand of J. H. Davies.

A collection of notebooks and unbound leaves and fragments containing poetry in strict and free metres and prose writings by and largely in the hand of Rhys Williams ('Manod Wyllt'; 1841-67), of Hendre, Blaenpennal, Cardiganshire. Such of the compostions as are dated belong to the period 1857-65. Some of the verses are covered by letters to [Richard Davies] 'Mynyddog', 1864, [Hugh Parry] 'Hywel Glan Cefni', 1864, [John Lewis] 'Ioan Mynyw', undated, etc., and others are annotated in the hand of Benjamin Williams ('Gwynionydd'), who anonymously edited Caniadau Manod Wyllt, gyda Chofiant o'r Awdur (Aberystwyth, 1867). The prose writings consist of essays, lectures and expository notes on scripture and among the titles are 'Meddwdod a'i Effeithiau', 'Dylanwad Cymdeithas ar Fasnach a Chelfyddyd', 'Darlith ar Nodweddiad Cynulleidfaol y Cymru', 'Santeiddhad a Ffrwythau' ('Un o Destynau Cyfarfod dau fisol yr ysgolion yn Ysbytti, Mawrth 20 1861'), 'Darlith ar y Myglys', 'Anniweirdeb', 'Na chymer enw Duw yn ofer', 'Cariad', 'Meddwl', etc. One volume was originally an account book, 1845-65, of ?a local (Blaenpennal area) Women's Friendly Society and was subsequently used as a scrap book for cuttings from Baner ac Amserau Cymru, 20 September 1865, recording proceedings at the Aberystwyth National Eisteddfod of that year. Among a few related items in the collection is a holograph list of literary prizes entitled 'Cofrestr o'r Gwobryon a Enillais', 1862-3.

A composite volume compiled by Owen Williams, Fronheulog, Waunfawr in 1857. It comprises: I. Written on the inside lower cover is a long note by O[wen] Williams, Fronheulog, Waunfawr, 1857, of which the following is an extract, - 'Myfi a gesglais gynhwysedd y llyfr hwn o'r hen ysgrifiau a ddaeth i'm dwylaw oeddynt eiddo Dafydd Ddu Eryri ac a delais am eu rhwymo yn nghyd megys y gwelir yma er's llawer o flynyddoedd yn ol ...'.

A notebook of William Davies, Froodvale (Ffrwdfâl), bound in brown paper and inscribed 'W. Davies, Ph. D. April 12, 1846'. It contains extracts from expositary notes on scripture and notes of sermons, 1846-9 and undated, preached at Park[-y-rhos], Crug[-y-bar], Esger[dawe] and Rhydybont Congregational churches and at farmhouses called Penrhiwe and Tynypyllau in the Cynwyl Gaeo area, Carmarthenshire; poetry in Welsh and English, 1847 and undated, titles which include: 'To Rev. D[avid] E[vans, rector of] Kilgerran', 'On the Marriage of Rev. M. Jones R[ural] Dean', and 'To Tegid' [i.e. John Jones ('Ioan Tegid')], etc.; a few particulars of 'Pubs', i.e. preaching publications, mainly in Pembrokeshire, June-July 1847; and memoranda of curricula at Brecon [Independent] and Carm[arthen Presbyterian] Colleges 1846, and of book titles, of personal addresses, etc.

A composite manuscript in the hand of D. Silvan Evans containing 'Penillion', numbered 83-93, being a continuation of the series ending on page 111 of Ysten Sioned (Aberystwyth, 1882), and inscribed 'sent off to 89 (inclusive) Dec. 4, 1883' (no. 93 taken from the Oswestry Advertizer, 29 November 1882), together with one additional unnumbered stanza ('The two last line [sic] by D. S. E.'); some Welsh dictionary material, in the form of 'cywydd' couplets and other quotations, illustrating the use of words beginning mainly with the letter C ; and transcripts of free metre poetry by Dafydd o'r Nant and Syr Huw Dafydd ('O Gelli Gaer').

An early nineteenth century manuscript in the hand of, and consisting largely of poetry by, David Thomas ('Dafydd Ddu Eryri'). Most of the poems have been published in Corph y Gaingc (Dolgellau, 1810). The volume also contains extracts from printed works; 'Yr Angel gwarchweidwol. Cân newydd Gorph. 27 1802'; a poem entitled 'My Mother. A scrap-book inferentially compiled by John Lloyd Jones ('Clwydwenfro'; 1835-1919) containing press cuttings and a few manuscript items. Some of the cuttings are dated within the 1850s-1870s and among the more interesting titles are 'Hynodion Cwm Rhondda .... Testyn Cystadleuol Eisteddfod y Porth, Nadolig, 1861'; 'Collegiate and University Education in Wales'; 'Llythyr oddiwrth y Parch. Morris Phillips, Cenhadwr i India'; 'Teyrnged i Goffadwriaeth Ioan Pedr'; 'Beirniadaeth ar Gyfansoddiadau Barddonol Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Aberdar, Awst 1861'; 'Llangollen Great National Eisteddfod' [1858]; 'Y Ffrwydriad yn Abercarn'; 'Sketches of Cardiff Preachers'; etc. The manuscript material comprises a tale entitled 'The Bride of Santa Croce', 19 November 1856, described in an annotation by J. Ll. James as 'the composition of the late John Griffith Davies (son of the Rev. J. Davies ['Siôn Gymro'], Glandwr, Pembrokeshire) who wrote it and sent it to John Lloyd James, then a student at Carmarthen College, that he might fill up the outline', and verses entitled 'Y Messiah', etc. addressed to John Ll. James, Berllandawel, Llanglwydwen and annotated in the latter's hand 'J. G. Davies, Yetwen, pan yn Narberth', etc. The outer upper cover is inscribed, in the hand of J. H. Davies, 'Articles and poetry from Cyfaill y Werin and other papers'.
