On one of the fly-leaves is a list of scribes ('Rhestr o Enwau Ysgrifenwyr y Llythyrau sydd yn y llyfryn hwn') in the hand of John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'). The volume is lettered 'Cyfrinion y Beirdd'.

A 'waste book' of Ebenezer Thomas ('Eben Fardd') consisting largely of problems in fluxions, together with 'The Welsh' and 'The Welsh Language' (being attacks on the Welsh people for their prejudices against the English language and their adherence to their native language), an incomplete draft of a play entitled 'Deio Meurig's Visit to Pwllhely on a Saturday afternoon in June', English and Welsh verses; etc.

A scrap-book of printed matter compiled by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd') containing poetry by, and material relating to the life and work of, Morris Williams ('Nicander'; 1809-74).

Miscellaneous material including notes on legends associated with 'Llyn Barfog' and 'Llyn tri Graienyn' in Merioneth [in the hand of E. G. B. Phillimore]; 'Cân croesawiad i Edmund Buckley, esq., ar ei ddyfodiad iw oed, Mai 7ed 1882. Buddugol yn Eisteddfod Llanymawddwy Mehefin 7ed 1882' by L. Jones, Bwlch; an elegy entitled 'Dyhuddiant. Cyflwynedig i'r Parch. D. Silvan Evans, ar Farwolaeth ei anwyl Fab, Dr Tegid Aneurin Evans, Fflint. Gan J. Callestr Ellis, 23 Coleshill Terrace, Flint. Ebrill 25ain 1887'; and verses entitled 'The Bunking of Alfred Hebden and Andrew Lang'.

Miscellaneous notebooks and unbound papers from the library of, and largely in the hand of, Owen Jones (1833-99), Calvinistic Methodist minister, man of letters, book collector and bibliographer, of Liverpool and Llansantffraid-ym-Mechain, Montgomeryshire. They include a fragment of a late eighteenth century manuscript containing 'Carol Plygain' by John Cadwaladr, verses by Ellis William, Llwunc[y]nfal, etc. ('Howel Jones his Book ... 1792,' 'Howel Jones Llwyncunfal ... ber 1792'); a volume of poetry including three libretti entitled 'Samson (Cyfieithiad o waith [John] Mil[ton]', 'Deborah' ('Finis May 4th 1861') and 'Y Cread' ('11/3/62'), and Welsh and English originals and translations, 1860-3 (e.g. 'The Hymns of A[nn] G[riffiths] rendered into English', 'Gray's Elegy'); a draft list of 'Hen Ddiarhebion' [old Welsh proverbs] rendered into Welsh verse (nos 1-540; one section dated 3 March [18]63); copious draft bibliographies of prose and poetry works by individual Welsh authors; etc. The material was originally tied in a brown paper wrapper inscribed by J[ohn] B[allinger], 'Library of the late Rev. Owen Jones, notes lent to Mr J. H. Davies by Miss Janet Jones, & by him deposited in the N[ational] L[ibrary of Wales]. 15-12-[19]09'.

A folder containing eight files of original letters and copies of letters and poetry from the eighteenth to the twentieth century. Files 1-3: Transcripts of letters by Lewis and Richard Morris, mainly to Evan Evans ('Ieuan Fardd') and Dafydd Jones of Trefriw, almost all published in Hugh Owen (ed.), Additional Letters of the Morrises of Anglesey (1735-1786), Y Cymmrodor, Vol. XLIX, 1947-9, the remainder published in G. J. Williams (gol.) Llythyrau at Ddafydd Jones o Drefriw. Cylchgrawn Llyfrgell Genedlaethol Cymru. Atodiad. Cyfres III, Rhif 2 (1942), and J. H. Davies (ed.), The Letters of Lewis, Richard, William and John Morris of Anglesey (Morrisiaid Mon) (Aberystwyth, 1907-9). The original letters or copies from which these copies were transcribed are in the British Museum (Add MSS 14929, 15021, 15024, 15029) and the National Library of Wales (mainly Panton 74 and NLW MS 476). There is also a transcript of a letter from the Reverend Thomas Ellis, Holyhead to the Reverend Humphrey Owen and the Reverend J. Hoare, 1742 (the original letter is preserved in NLW MS 478), and a copy of Evan Evans's elegy to Lewis Morris, with notes on the text. File 4: Transcripts of letters from Edward Richard, Ystrad Meurig, c. 1759-1766, to Evan Evans ('Ieuan Fardd'). There are also copies of two short letters to Evan Evans from Roderick Lewis, Trefeglwys, and William Howell, Llanidloes, which were written on the same sheet as Edward Richard's letter of 1 March 1766. The original letters are preserved in NLW MS Panton 74. A transcript of a letter from Edward Richard, 1766, to Richard Morris (from BM Add MS 15025), and extracts from letters from Edward Richard to Lewis Morris, 1759 and undated (from BM Add MS 15029). A holograph letter from Edward Richard, Ystradmeuryg, 1762, to Lewis Morris, Penbryn (published in Hugh Owen, op. cit. Part II, pp. 562-3). File 5: A holograph letter from [the Reverend] W[illiam] Davies, Llanwryn [Montgomeryshire], 1710, to Henry Newman at the Reverend Mr Shute's in Bartlet's Buildings, London (receipt of letter and a packet from the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, subscriptions from other parishes, has partly prevailed with a certain minister to become a corresponding member). The letter bears the number 2381 (see Mary Clement (ed.), Correspondence and minutes of the S.P.C.K. relating to Wales 1699-1740 (Cardiff, 1952), p. 35. Abstract No. 2381). The letters are addressed to John Roberts ('Sion Lleyn'), Pwllheli (4), 1791-1806 (corrections to addressee's poetry, tributes to writer's brother, Humphrey, after his death, some short poetical compositions by the writer), to Griffith Williams ('Gutyn Peris'), Llandygai (8), 1799-1819, (poetry, subjects upon which writer desired addressee to compose hymns, meetings of bards and eisteddfodau, comments and news of contemporary poets, writer's health and work), and one letter, addressee not named, 1804, (addressee's poetry which writer had received, desires addressee to render 2 Samuel XXII in strict metres and to ask other poets to do the same). The poetry includes verses entitled 'Y Cynauaf mawr diweddaf' subscribed 'D. T. a'i cant allan o'r Saesneg ar ddymuniad John Jones Llandwrog Medi 10d 1804 (cf. Dafydd Thomas (Dafydd Ddû Eryri), Corph y Gaingc (Caernarfon, 1834), pp. 323-4), and 'Englynion newyddion i Long newydd o Gaernarfon yr hon a elwir Valiant'. There is also some poetry in English by [John Blackwell ('Alun')] and in Welsh by Evan Evans ('Ieuan Glan Geirionydd'). Holograph poetical compositions, including drafts, by William Morgan Williams ('Fferyllfardd'; 1832-77), among them 'Hiraeth y Bardd am Gymru' ('Y Llyfr Cyntaf' and 'Yr Ail Lyfr'), 'Awdl Gynghaneddol', an 'awdl' on 'Anian yn ei Phrydferthwch yn Datgan Gogoniant Duw', a Welsh translation of ['Safe in the arms of Jesus'], and 'englynion', etc. on various subjects. One notebook contains early items, 1848-50, by 'Fferyllfardd', together with items by W. Williams, Pwllheli [(?) 'Gwilym Heli', father of W. M. Williams ('Fferyllfardd')], including a transcript of 'Anerchiad at Dafydd Owain or Gaerwen neu Dewi Wynn of Eifion Pan yn byw yn Mhwllheli yn y flwyddyn 1826'. There are also a few press cuttings and a draft of a presidential address. The wrapping paper bears the words 'Gweithiau Fferyll-fardd. I'w Hadolygu - Gan Myrddin Fardd.'

Letters and miscellaneous papers comprising two letters [+], 1693, from Ch[arles] Owen, Oswestree to the Lady Archer near Epping in Essex (acknowledging all the expressions of her ladyship's extraordinary favours to him, mentioning that after a tedious ramble and censorious suspicions he came home in safety, the liberality of friends, 'Yet all this will not do for a Compensation for the injury done me', he desired his brother to assist Mr (?) Durrant in adjusting those wretched differences at Epping - her Ladyship's honourable attempts towards it); seven letters [+] from T[homas] Burgess, successively bishop of St Davids and of Salisbury, one written from C[orpus] C[hristi] C[ollege], Oxford, 1787, to T[homas] Falconer, Esq'r, Chester (thanking him for the present of his little book, requesting the addressee's opinion on the meaning of a passage from the Gospels and quoting from the preface to a second edition of the [Salisbury] spelling-book), two, possibly three, written from Abergwilly Palace and London, 1813-14, to the Reverend T. W. [recte T. D.] Fosbrooke, Walford, near Ross (commending the addressee's intention of publishing a 'cheap comment' on the New Testament, he seems to have taken up a very wrong conception of the Bible Society) and three written from Salisbury, 1831, to Mr Strong, bookseller, Bristol (instructions re books, was very sorry to see that the addressee has been a sufferer by the late disastrous events at Bristol); a copy of an engraved portrait of the Right Reverend Thomas Burgess, DD, Lord Bishop of Salisbury; a letter, year not given, from Joseph D[?ownes], Builth to [John Dix] (acknowledging the addressee's most welcome letter belying his wife's guesses, the indirect source of the addressee's recovery from misfortune if not illness, his own writing, mention of Edinburgh, etc.); a note, 1811, from Mr Pennant, Downing to a Mrs Williams (complying with her request on behalf of Hugh Shone and his aged wife); a list by J. The items marked + were formerly Phillipps MS 35051 (see letter dated 9 February 1973 from Dr A. N. L. Munby to the Keeper of Manuscripts, National Library of Wales). # - The wrapping paper has on it 'Phillipps MSS 34929' in pencil in the autograph of J. H. Davies but, with the exception of the 'inventory of goods', the contents of this package do not appear to correspond to the description of Phillipps MS 34929 as given by Dr Munby in his letter, although Phillipps MS 34929 was purchased by J. H. Davies.

A composite volume lettered on the spine 'Church-Rates' and bearing the name of 'Wm Thomas, Bwlchnewydd 1860' [i.e. the Reverend William Thomas (1823-99), Congregational minister first at Capel Isaac then at Bwlchnewydd and Elim, Carmarthenshire, afterwards living at Parc-glas near Carmarthen]. It contains a number of printed items, viz. four tracts of the British Anti-state-church Association, New Series, Nos. 1, 5, 4 and 6 (1850-51); three publications of the Society for the Liberation of Religion from State-Patronage and Control (The New Burial Acts, as they affect Dissenters ..., fourth edition, enlarged [1857], Practical Directions to the Opponents of Church-Rates, Part I, third edition [?1857], and Illegal Church-Rates: being practical directions to the opponents of church rates, Part II [1856]); 'Y Dreth Eglwys yn mhlwyf Cynwyl Gaio' by 'Ap Gryphydh', i.e. W[illia]m Thomas, Bwlchnewydd, reprinted from Y Diwygiwr, 1857, pp. 377-80, with some marginal notes by William Thomas; Y Bugail; neu flaidd yn rhith dafad ... gan awdwr y "Whigs a'r Tories", &c. At the beginning of the volume, in manuscript, are a note of 'The position of the Church Rate Question in the H. Cns. from 1853 to 1861 inclusive' and 'A List of the Pamphlets the volume contains ...', and at the end of the volume, also in manuscript, by William Thomas, are 'Extracts & Notes. Braintree Church Rate Case' and 'Notes & correspondence on the Church Rate in the Parish of Cayo'. Loose in the volume is an incomplete copy of Y Parchedig Gecryn Penchwiban.

'Periglor Wakefield', a Welsh translation by 'Edeyrn Dafod Aur' [probably the Reverend J. Myrddin Thomas (1838-1914), Mold] for the Wrexham Eisteddfod, 1876, of The Vicar of Wakefield by Oliver Goldsmith. With the translation is a letter, 1876, from 'Edeyrn Davod Aur' to the adjudicator. Also included are some sheets of a draft copy with poetry, extracts transcribed in another hand from Y Gwyliedydd, 1829-30, and a fragment in yet another hand referring to the discovery of an urnfield in the parish of Llanfachraith [sic, Merionethshire], 1875.

A notebook bearing the name 'Nancy Williams, Drysgol, Abergwesyn' containing press cuttings (poetry, etc.) in English and Welsh and some items in manuscript including an 'englyn' 'I Miss Nancy Williams' by [the Reverend Evan Afan Jenkins] 'Ifan Afan', Moriah, Whitland. The press cuttings include 'Rhestr o Hen Dai Adfeiledig ym mhlwyf Llanwrtyd gan Mr Evan Jones, Tynypant, Llanwrtyd', relating to Llanddewi Abergwesyn, Llanfihangel Abergwesyn and Tir-yr-Abad.
