Papers of Arthur John Williams, 1881-1943, including political papers comprising letters, 1868-1911; papers relating to legal, electoral and land reforms, 1867-1911; papers relating to his parliamentary elections in Birkenhead and Glamorgan, 1880-1895; papers relating to South Glamorgan politics, 1886-1924; material concerning the National Liberal Club, 1883-1951; diaries, 1864-1911; diaries of Rose Harriette Thompson Crawshay 1868-1943; and family and financial papers, 1767-1943.

Williams, Arthur John, 1833-1911.

Thomas Burt, House of Commons,

Is very pleased with Arthur John Williams's letter, and has formed a high opinion of him. Provides information on the Northumberland and Durham Miners Permanent Relief Fund.

Henry Richard, 22 Bolton Gardens,

The Welsh MPs must meet to discuss Disestablishment, a Land Bill for Wales and intermediate education - 'It will not be easy to satisfy the vague & somewhat vast expectations some ... are cherishing as to what we can do for them by the fancied omnipotence of our membership'. Over Disestablishment, Dillwyn has acted 'entirely on his own responsibility', and it is vital to secure as much support as possible in the House. Wrote to Gladstone before the election about Disestablishment but received 'an evasive reply'. The formation of a League to press for Disestablishment is possible but would be 'a formidable undertaking involving great labour and expence'. The efforts of the Liberation Society have borne fruit in Wales.

J. Picton Turbervill, Ewenny Priory,

A political meeting will be held at a local chapel on 28 January. A strong Liberal candidate is needed to defeat the Conservative. J. Picton Turbervill cannot stand - 'being too old & too deaf to enter on such a career'. J. Dillwyn Llewellyn is to stand in the Western District. Cannot find another candidate.

Jesse Collings, Edgbaston,

Wrote to Arthur John Williams recently on the Peasant Proprietary Bill. A good meeting was held at Nottingham on Tuesday to discuss 'the restoration of public rights'. Discusses the 'several classes of enclosures'.

Wolmer, House of Lords,

The Lord Chancellor believes that County Court Judges should 'abstain from taking part in political demonstrations of a party character'. See A 2/1 for Arthur John Williams's letter.

Sir John Rhys, Jesus College, Oxford,

Has been unable to find a suitable inscription for the portals of Arthur John Williams's house. Hopes to go to the Isle of Man to study the Manx language before it dies. Is unable to visit the library at Merthyr Mawr.

E. A. Dillwyn, Bridgend,

Thanks for tribute paid by Arthur John Williams at Penarth on Wednesday to E. A. Dillwyn's father as reported in the South Wales Star.

G. Williams, Miskin Manor,

Has heard that Abel Thomas has declined the opportunity to be the 'brief' in the Cilfynydd Enquiry. Rhys's name has at least been brought to the notice of the Home Secretary.

Rhys Williams, Miskin Manor,

Prosecutions are to follow the Albion disaster. Wishes A. J. Williams to ask Rigby to give Rhys Williams a Treasury brief. Could Asquith help?.

H. H. Asquith, Home Department,

The Treasury will select the Counsel in the Albion prosecution. Cannot address A. J. Williams's constituents as all autumn and winter engagements have been arranged. Recognizes that A. J. Williams has 'special claims' to the assistance of 'those who are in official positions in the party'. Hopes others can respond.

Sir John Rhys, Jesus College, Oxford,

Is 'anxious to have the Welsh Central Board Scheme set right by our Liberal friends rather than by any less friendly hand in the House of Lords'. Acland has agreed to act if A. J. Williams and his colleagues agree. Would much appreciate A. J. Williams's help.
