Manuscripts, 1901-1971, brought together (as gifts and purchases) by the Welsh Arts Council, 1965-1971.

Some two hundred poems, mostly fair copies, very few in more than one version, two in Welsh, only one noted in his published collections. A relatively small number are dated; these dates run from 1930 to 1951. The poems all originally on loose sheets of paper are bound in a very rough chronological order. 287 Ff. Minor pieces, comprising: 'Merthyr bookend', 'a verse version of part of the final paragraphs of Off to Philadelphia in the morning', written 1968 (ff. 1-4); 'Come unto me, Poor Iron Man' a short story, a late work. Typescript, with autograph corrections (ff. 5-7); 'Old-timer visits New Town'. The author's reflections (f. 8); an autobiographical piece dated 27 April 1970 (ff. 9-11).

Draft of Glyn Jones's novel, The Island of Apples (London, 1965), with considerable evidence of the author's changes and rearrangement. Probably the last draft before typing. Loose leaves filed on string with final pagination running 1-436.

The MS contains somewhat less than half the published novel; the latter shows some changes. The author writes an extraordinarily compressed page, seldom correcting even a word. Cymdeithas Cymru Newydd was conceived by Davies Aberpennar (Pennar Davies) in 1939. It miscarried with the coming of the War. It was to have been a society to bring together Welsh writers, both those writing in Welsh and those writing in English. The present file comprises papers and notes of Davies Aberpennar relating to the society (items 1-7), newspaper cuttings (items 55-76) and letters written to Davies Aberpennar, mostly in response to solicitations for support from those listed below (number of letters in brackets). Cuttings from magazines, fair typescript copies, fair and worked typescript and autograph drafts of the poems collected in Fidelities (London, 1968). All but one of the poems in the volume are represented, by numbers of drafts up to twenty. Also included are drafts of the preliminaries of the volume (ff. 4-9) and a letter from Gwen Watkins (f. 3) concerning these papers. Drafts of a few poems in Fidelities are among the Vernon Watkins Papers in the British Museum, as Mrs Watkins's letter explains. A contents list shows the number of drafts of each poem, as well as locating them. Some of the drafts are dated. There are five short poems not included in Fidelities, cf. contents list.
