Commercial Department,

Administrative files created and kept by the Commercial Department of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association. The department dealt mainly with commercial aspects of coal mining, which included the maintenance and use of railway wagons for coal transport, the negotiation of special railway rates and dock charges for the transport and shipping of coal, the negotiation with foreign countries for the exchange of Welsh coals for pitwood during wartime, the loading of coal and provision of special machinery at docks, compliance with government legislation on the health and safety of miners, negotiations with miners' groups on wages and holidays, and representation in the Mining Association of Great Britain.

Commercial Department files relating to the maintenance, repair, pooling and wartime requisitioning of colliery wagons. Material comprises letters and correspondence, circulars, reports, statistics, memoranda, extracts of committee minutes, and some technical specifications and drawings.

Large group of papers on subjects including wear and tear allowance for income tax purposes, 1939; the provision of terminal facilities for 20-ton wagons at collieries, 1930-1933; terminal charges (1926 proceedings of the Railway Rates Tribunal); private siding agreement at Fernhill, including a copy of the 1912 Agreement, 1931-1932; damage caused to private wagons and injuries to repairers, 1930; papers of a test case regarding responsibility for payments for the renewal of points and crossings near colliery sidings, 1927-1931; the classification of goods; and the price of Welsh coal to the Swedish Naval Authority, 1930.

Papers comprising notices and drafts of forthcoming British Standards relating to picks, mattocks, screen analysis of coal, sampling of coal, mining type transformers, miners' lamp bulbs, tests for steam boilers, and other technical subjects. Also, revisions for standards and specifications including miners' lamp bulbs pump tests and test sieves. Includes the handbook of British Standards, 1942 and 1943, and monthly information sheets, September 1944-December 1946.

Re-taring of wagons and converted wagons,

Papers relating to the re-taring of wagons, 1940-1943; use of converted wagons, 1937-1940; storage of empty wagons, brake lever pins, 1937; the inadequate lighting on appliances, 1932; fire risk on traders' wagons, 1936 and 1946; and coal shipping appliances available at the Bristol Channel ports, 1937. Contains some papers relating to the Jamaica railways converting away from steam locomotives, 1936.

Pooling of wagons during wartime: correspondence with South Wales owners,

Correspondence between the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association and its member companies on issues relating to the requisitioning of privately-owned wagons by the War Department during wartime. The majority of correspondence relates to reduced railway charges during wartime, damage to requisitioned wagons by enemy action, wagon repairs, and insurance of requisitioned wagons. Folders are arranged in alphabetical order by name of the colliery company. Companies A to P in box 1; companies R to Z in box 2.

Papers relating to the Joint Sub-committee of representatives, 1933-1937, and the Mining Association of Great Britain Sub-committee, 1939-1946. Material covers topics such as draw hooks and bars, wheels with cast iron bosses, G.R. plating and repairs, 1933-1938; standard metal-bodied 12-ton mineral wagons, 1934-1935, and the wagon census of 1937.
