Letters to Sara John

The file comprises transcripts of extracts from letters written by Augustus John to his granddaughter Sara John, [1959]-1961, discussing his painting of her. The original letters were purchased by NLW in January 2004 (NLW MS 23922D, ff. 12-25).

The file comprises photocopies of letters written to Augustus John. The correspondents include John Samp[son], 1910, Frida Strindberg, [?1911], [?1914]; Wyndham Lewis, 1928; James Joyce, [1933]; Dora Yates, 1947; Holt Beever & Kinsey, Solicitors, London, 1950, declaring that The Rt Hon. Katharine Viscountess Tredegar had left him a Bronze Angel by Franc Krisnic in her will; and Ulick O'Connnor, 1958, together with a translation of a letter written in French by Albert Schweitzer, [1955], to the artist, and a covenant, 1927, signed by Horace de Vere Cole and Augustus John to drink no rum, whisky, gin or vodka.

Homer Saint-Gaudens correspondence

The file comprises photocopies of letters and telegrams, 1923-1926, to Homer Saint-Gaudens, Director of Fine Arts, Carnegie Institute of Pittsburgh, and his replies relating to arrangements for Augustus John's first visit to the States in 1923 and his exhibition, together with a letter, 1930, from Augustus John to him.

Correspondence with Percy Wyndham Lewis

The file comprises photocopies of correspondence, [?1905]-[1951], together with a cutting entitled 'Damning and blasting - Michael Holroyd writes about the volcanic relationship between Wyndham Lewis and Augustus John', The Listener, July 1972. [On 30 November 1972 he gave the Don Carlos Coloma Memorial Lecture, 'Damn and "Blast"! The Friendship of Wyndham Lewis and Augustus John', to the Royal Society of Literature which was later published in his Unreceived opinions (London, 1973)]. Also included is an explanatory leaflet 'Blast' produced for an exhibition of Wyndham Lewis's work in art and literature at the University of Lancaster, 1979.

Letters to Scott Macfie

The file comprises photocopies of letters, [1907]-1912, from Augustus John to Scott Macfie, secretary and editor of the Journal of the Gypsy Lore Society, and from the latter to the artist, [1910]-[1912], together with a photocopy of Augustus John's article 'Russian gypsies at Marseilles and Milan' and 'The songs of Fabian de Castro, El Gypatano', Journal of the Gypsy Lore Society. Also included are extracts of a letter, 1914, from Augustus John to Scott Macfie.
