Draft letters

The file comprises miscellaneous manuscript drafts of letters from David Jones to friends and associates, including William Blissett, Jim and Helen Ede, Dame Edith [Sitwell], Ethel [Watts], Rachel Bromwich, Vernon [Watkins], Aneirin [Talfan Davies], [Rhydwen] Williams, [Thomas] Charles Edwards, Prof. Thomas Jones and others. Many of the drafts are incomplete, many only of the first paragraph of the letter. There is also a short note from D. Gwenallt Jones, 1957.

Letters to The Times

The file comprises manuscript draft letters to The Times, Listener and the Catholic Herald, relating to The Anathemata and its broadcast, Tryweryn, church art, abstract art, changes in the liturgy, A. S. Hartrick, Augustus John, and other subjects, and a draft preface to 'The Dream of Private Clitus'. There are also draft letters to friends and associates, such as Aneirin Talfan Davies, and J. E. Jones (Plaid Cymru secretary).

The file comprises invitations to exhibitions at the Tate Gallery, British Museum, Hanover Gallery, Leicester galleries and various other galleries, predominantly in London, 1945-1970 (with gaps) with exhibition catalogues for George Stubbs (1957), Augustus John (1948), Andre Bauchant (1960), Paule Vezelay and Winifred Nicholson (1954), Ben Nicholson (1954), Lady Patricia Ramsay (1959), the '56 Group [Wales]', and The New English Art Club (1945).

The file comprises letters to David Jones, including a typed acknowledgement from Lloyd George, 1910; letters relating to David Jones' Civil List Pension, 1954 and 1967; a letter asking if he will accept the CBE, with a draft acknowledgement, 1955; a letter from the Queen Mother's Lady in Waiting, 1955; a signed letter from Neville Chamberlain relating to In Parenthesis, 1939; and a letter relating to television coverage for Wales from Megan Lloyd George, 1959. There are also invitations to garden parties at Buckingham Palace, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, and 1955 with David Jones' draft refusals.

Letters to Welsh correspondents

The file comprises manuscript drafts of letters to persons identified by Harman Grisewood as 'Welsh correspondents & acquaintances', including Alun Jones, [Leonard] Twiston-Davies, [Rhydwen] Wiliams, T. H. Parry-Williams and Jonah Jones. Amongst the subjects discussed or referred to are The Anathemata ('I'm working on a book that I suppose may be finished some time but heaven knows when---', 1944); early British and Welsh history; Christopher Dawson [1970]; a commentary by Alun Jones on 'these pieces of mine' (the sleeve notes for the record in the 'Poets of Wales' series of David Jones reading selections of his work?); and the situation of the arts in modern civilization (1972); the inscription made by him and presented to Sir Thomas Parry-Williams by the Hon. Society of Cymmrodorion in 1967; a short questionnaire concerning Wales and the First World War (see The London Welshman, December 1964, pp. 3-4); and the 'Letter from David Jones' published in Poetry Wales, David Jones Special Number, vol. 8, no. 3 (Winter 1972), pp. 5-9. There are a number of drafts of a letter to Gwynfor Evans congratulating him on his electoral victory at Carmarthen in 1966.

Charles Edwards, Gwynfor Evans, Peter Orr, Valerie Wynne-Williams, Rachel Bromwich, and others. Many of the drafts are incomplete, many only of the first paragraph of the letter. Literary manuscripts of David Jones, with manuscript drafts of In Parenthesis: Seinnyessit e gledyf ym penn mameu; The Anathemata: Fragments of an attempted writing; Epoch and Artist: Selected writings by David Jones; The Sleeping Lord and other fragments; The Dying Gaul and other writings, and The Roman Quarry and other sequences. There is a substantial body of letters to David Jones from friends, editors and others, 1910-1976; draft letters from David Jones to friends, newspaper editors and others, 1929-1982; and letters by David Jones, 1919-1985, published in Dai Greatcoat: A self-portrait of David Jones in his letters. There are some examples of David Jones' art, and material relating to David Jones as an artist, as well as personal documents, financial papers, family papers, photographs, and accumulated research material.

P10 Revised page proofs

The file comprises the second revise of the page proofs, pages 7, 43, 79-82, 207-212, 217-8, 237-8, and 241-3. There are corrections and revision by David Jones in pencil and red ink. Not all of the corrections are found in the 1st edition. Some of the latter corrections are marked by David Jones with a yellow cross.

P6 Page proofs

The file comprises page proofs of Parts V-VIII, which were originally stapled together, but found loose and scattered, with page 168 wanting. It has been stamped for return to the printers and marked 'Authors final' with the date 18 April 1952 on page 122. It has been corrected and revised by David Jones in pencil and red ink, marked by blue strokes, perhaps David Jones' mark of a transfer of the corrections to the set of page proofs returned to the printer, or of his seeing the corrections made in the revise. All alterations made in the revise seem to be marked in P6. There are comments by the 'Faber hand' throughout (as in P3) with replies by David Jones e.g. page 131.

P5 Page proofs

The file comprises page proofs of Parts V-VIII, which were stapled together. They have been corrected by David Jones in pencil and red ink, less so than P6. It includes correction and revision which do not appear in the revised page proofs: probably they were made after the return of the page proofs to the printer. Most of these are marked by David Jones in red or yellow. A few of them David Jones failed to pick up later (e.g. p. 216).

P4 Page proofs

The file comprises page proofs of the Preface and Parts I-IV, which were stapled together. They have been corrected by David Jones in pencil, ink and red ink, and include more revisions than P3. On page 9 David Jones has written 'Please return this copy of galley pages to me' and his address is written on p. 121v.

P3 Page proofs

The file comprises page proofs of the Preface and Parts I-IV, which were stapled together, and stamped for return to the printer. They have been corrected with minor revisions by David Jones in pencil and red ink, with suggestions regarding layout. There are instructions to the printer in the 'Faber' hand which has dated the proofs April 1952 on p. 9.

P2 Galley proofs

The file comprises the Faber & Faber reader's set of galley proofs with some queries in ink by two readers. There are also corrections and revisions in pencil, ink and red crayon by David Jones. His work on the galleys is dated February 1952 (pp. 13, 67). Galleys 17, 40-43 and 68 are wanting, and galleys 61-65 have all had sections cut out of them by David Jones for use in P7.

P1 Galley proofs

The file comprises David Jones's complete set of galley proofs with his corrections in pencil and ink. His work on the galleys is dated February-March 1952 (pp. 13, 36, 53). Later levels of correction are given in coloured crayon marks.

T7

The file comprises carbons of re-typed pages and rejected top copies of pages which were re-typed a second time. Some of the pages 7-9 have been typed on a smaller faced machine. There is slight revision in pencil on some of the carbons.
