Notebooks and other research materials,

Notebooks used by Jan Morris to record details subsequently used to compile her various published works, together with other materials collected by her for the same purpose.

Pax Britannica,

The file comprises notebooks used by Jan Morris in her research towards compiling the first chapter of her trilogy relating to the British Empire.

'Post Pax',

The file comprises notebooks containing research notes relating to the publication of Pax Britannica. Many of the notebooks contain sketches of scenes of various landmarks and buildings visited by Jan Morris whilst compiling her notes on different countries.

'Pre Pax',

The file comprises Jan Morris's notes on the extent and influence of the British Empire in relation to various other countries. Many of the books have notes on various individuals who were influential in the colonisation of many of the countries. A list of the countries visited between 1965 and 1970, during the course of her research, may be found in notebook 1/4(xi). Many of the notebooks contain sketches of buildings and landmarks found in many of the countries, and all the notebooks contain a bibilography and a list of the countries visited whilst conducting her research.

The file comprises Jan Morris's research notes on Sydney, Australia. Many of the notebooks contain sketches of landmarks and buildings of interest, and all contain a bibliography. Many of the notes were created from the bibliographies listed.

Oxford,

The file comprises Jan Morris's research notes, used for the compilation of her book about Oxford, published in 1978.

Venice,

The file comprises Jan Morris's research notes on the Venetian Empire, 1204-1797; from its history in the Aegean, 1204-1714, Constantinople, 1204-1261, Crete, 1204-1669, Cyprus, 1489-1571, to Dalmatia and Greece, 1204-1797. The notebooks contain many sketches of landmarks and buildings in the countries visited by Jan Morris during her researches. The file also comprises Jan Morris's research notes on the history of Venice.
