Helen Thomas: Quick March

An autobiographical work entitled 'Quick March', written [in 1931] by Helen Thomas, and bearing corrections and paragraph marks, evidently in preparation for publication. The work appeared untitled as the seventeenth and final chapter of her second memoir, World Without End (London: Heinemann, 1931), pp. 181-194. This manuscript was claimed by the seller to have been owned by Vita Sackville-West, who reviewed World Without End (see Helen Thomas, Time & Again: Memoirs and Letters, ed. by Myfanwy Thomas (Manchester, 1978), p. 130).

Poems, essays and other prose items written by Eliza Carmarthen (1825-1872), i.e. Eliza Phillipps Williams, Carmarthen, who married (1) the Rev. John Saunders Hughes and (2) the Rev. Thomas Johns.
The volume contains short essays and thoughts on Scriptural and other subjects, two short stories entitled 'I wish to be happy' and 'The Dying Student' and a large number of hymns and poems, mostly in English. Also included are two poems in English by Eliza's father John Williams, with a Welsh translation of one of them, and silhouettes by the late Miss Aldrit, Highbury Hall, Weston-super-Mare, and Mrs Johns.

Papers, 1954-1975, of the Rev. R. M. Verity, Vicar of St Mary the Virgin in Fordingbridge, Hampshire, relating mainly to the funeral of Augustus John in November 1961 and the unveiling of the memorial to him in Fordingbridge in 1967.
The papers include letters to Verity from the John family, comprising eight letters and a postcard from Dorelia John, 1955-1969, four letters from Admiral Sir Caspar John, 1961-1967, one letter from Romilly John, 1969, and three Christmas cards and a telegram from Augustus and Dorelia, 1956-1958. Also included are Augustus John's burial certificate, Verity's notes for the memorial service [?and funeral] and printed material including catalogues, 1954, 1975, newspaper cuttings, 1954-1970, invitations, printed orders of service and a copy of the volume The Drawings of Augustus John, introd. by Stephen Longstreet (Alhambra, Calif., 1967).

Twelve holograph poems by Waldo Williams, [1956] (ff. 1-10), written down from memory with the encouragement of Prof. J. Gwyn Griffiths and Dr Kate Bosse-Griffiths at their flat in 1 Eaton Crescent, Swansea; with the exception of 'Arfau' (ff. 6 verso-7), all the poems appeared in the volume Dail Pren (Llandysul, 1956). Also included are page proofs of the first typesetting of Dail Pren prepared by Gwasg Gomer in June 1956 (ff. 11-103), arranged by the poet with the help of Prof. Griffiths and Dr Bosse-Griffiths and including a few manuscript emendations in the hand of Prof. Griffiths.
The first typesetting differs significantly from the first published version of November 1956, with the poet having omitted twenty of the sixty-three poems and added twenty-three new poems.
