The Unionists at Llanidloes are estimated at 1,000 and as many as 1,600 have organised parades at Newtown. It is presumed that the military force will not enter Llanidloes before next Monday [6th inst.]. Steps will be taken to prevent interference on the part of the Chartists at Newtown.

Letter from R. H. Clive from the House of Commons to Edward [Viscount Clive]. Lord Russell has given orders for the dispatch of a detachment of troops from Dublin, and has expressed a wish that they be all quartered together, and suggests that a building be hired for the purpose. The detachment will disembark at Aberystwyth.

Lord John Russell requests a full report of the riot at Llanidloes and of the present state of the town. He trusts that depositions have been taken, and considers it highly important that the prisoners who have been rescued should be retaken.

Copy letter from John Owens, deputy sheriff of Montgomeryshire, at Newtown, to Joseph Jones, esq., clerk of the peace, at Welsh Pool. There are about 1,000 Chartists in Llanidloes. They have sent two men to Merthyr Tydfil to secure assistance against the military force, and have also sent agitators to Newtown. The town is at their mercy, and they will be subdued by nothing less than 100 Infantry backed up by the Shropshire and Montgomeryshire Cavalry.

Is of the opinion that the county yeomanry are not capable of subduing the rioters, and suggests that the South Shropshire Cavalry be asked to assist.

There have been no recent disturbances. The mayor has returned but is in a distressing state. So is John Price, one of the special constables. Has been able to ascertain the name of the person who commenced the assault on him, viz. Aby [Abraham] Owen. Several of the ringleaders have left the town. Begs to suggest the New Hall as suitable quarters for the military force.

Suggests that infantry from Brecon should accompany the cavalry and advocates an overwhelming military force.

Has received the requisition of the Montgomeryshire magistrates, and will set out immediately for Llanidloes with a party consisting of five officers, five sergeants, and eighty rank and file. Will arrive on Saturday afternoon.

Encloses a copy of Major Barlow's letter [No. MB1/57]. The cavalry will set out at ten and arrive at Llanidloes between five and six. Both Newtown and Llanidloes are at present calm. Some of the Unionists seem to believe that their conduct was excessive.

Desires copies of a letter received from Mr Marsh and of affidavits respecting the outbreak at Llanidloes.

Urging a boycott of the Caersws assembly; 'you will not, Welshmen ... give encouragement to men, who with a regard for your Interest on their lips, have a regard for their own Interest only in their hearts; and find it more convenient to live by the use of the Tongue than by the labour of their hands; by your toil than by their own'.

Has been instructed to hold an inspection of the South Salopian Yeomanry Cavalry, and encloses copies of returns which he desires completed on the day of the inspection.

Desires to know if, in view of the regiment's engagement in the Chartist revolt, it will be convenient for him to conduct his inspection at Shrewsbury on Monday, the 6th inst.

Has been informed that the regiment has marched into Montgomeryshire, and will therefore postpone his inspection.

Has been informed by Viscount Clive that the South Salopian Regiment of Yeomanry Cavalry has marched into Montgomeryshire; consequently thinks it wise to postpone his inspection. With a copy of the Adjutant General's reply, dated May 5, postponing Col Chatterton's inspection until further orders.

Copy instructions from Viscount Clive to the bailiffs of Montgomeryshire to make preparations for the arrival of the South Salopian Yeomanry Cavalry.

Encloses copies of letters received from Col. Williams Wynn. Will immediately move his regiment into Montgomery.
