Howel W. Lloyd: Barddoniaeth Guto'r Glyn

A volume containing a collection of transcripts of Welsh poetry from the British Museum and Peniarth collections made by Howel W. Lloyd (1816-1893), many of the poems having been printed in the History of Powys Fadog by J. Y. W. Lloyd, 1881-1887; the writer has added collations to some of the poems and has contributed many historical notes.

Historical prophecies

A 16th century miscellaneous collection, in Latin and English, of historical prophecies in verse and prose attributed to Merlin, Thomas of Erceldoune and others; the text begins on p. 14 and ends on p. 72, with many blank leaves.

Chronicle of the Brute,

A mid 15th century manuscript in English prose entitled Here begynneth a booke which is called Brute, the Cronycles of Englonde. There is an introductory paragraph (as in Harley MSS 1337, 2182 and 6251 and Stowe MS 71) beginning 'This booke treteth and telleth of the kynges and principal lordes that euer were in this londe ...' followed by a long rubric (as in Harleian MS 2182), mainly defaced, beginning 'The prolog of this booke declareth hou this [londe] was callyd Albyon ...'. The text begins on p. 2 and, like the majority of the manuscripts of the English Brute (see F. W. D. Brie, Geschichte und Quellen der mittelenglischen Prosachronik The Brute of England, 1905, p. 62), this manuscript ends with the capture of Rouen by Henry V in 1419. Illuminated initial and border on p. 1; chapter-initials in blue, with red flourishes; headings in red.

Yvain,

A 14th century manuscript in French prose containing the romance of Ywain (Owain ap Thomas ap Rhodri, otherwise Owain Lawgoch, otherwise Yvain de Galles (c. 1300-1378)). There is a rubric heading: 'Ceste liure est le liure de monseignor Y. et parole de maint buen cheualiers' and the text begins 'En ceste partie dit li contes que misser Yuain le fis au roi Vrien cheuauchait par une grant forest qui estoit apellee la perilleuse foreste ...'. The episode of the lion and dragon fighting (cf. Chrestien de Troyes, Le Chevalier au Lion, ll. 3341 sqq.) occurs on p. 1. There is a lacuna after p. 2. The text ends imperfectly. Inserted at the beginning is a letter to Lord Ashburnham from Thomas Boone the bookseller, 29 New Bond Street, 10 April [1852], concerning his purchase, on 'Ld. A.'s' behalf, of the following lots [at the Louis Philippe sale]: 1108 [Ashburnham Appendix 16] for 1605 fr., 1115 (Ashburnham Appendix 152) for 2150 fr., 1303 (Ashburnham Appendix 167, formerly Williams MS 529, now NLW MS 443D) for 1250 fr. and 1306 (formerly Williams MS 530, now NLW MS 444D) for 1960 fr. The manuscript includes coloured drawings illustrating the text, and a few illuminated initials.

John Williams, Llanrwst: Miscellanea

A collection of letters, 1742-1786, mainly to John Williams, agent to the Duke of Ancaster's estate at Gwydir, from John Ellis, Thomas Ellis, Robert Hughes, William Hughes, Robert Lloyd, D. W. Linden, L. Meyricke, Robert Myddelton, J. Parker, Thomas Patton, John Spranger and C. Wilmot. Also included are drafts and copies of letters by John Williams, transcripts of documents relating to the Llanrwst free school (cf NLW MS 470E) and memoirs of the Gwydir family, together with notes on books, Latin exercises and poetry.

Jones, 1849; miscellaneous papers belonging to A. J. Brereton (Andreas o Fôn) (1827-1885), including letters from W. M. Hughes, John Davies, Bangor, Edward Roberts (Iorwerth Glan Aled) and L. W. A volume containing transcripts and abstracts made for Sir John Williams (1840-1926), under the supervision of Dr E. A. Lewis (1880-1942), of historical material relating to the abbey of Whitland and the castle, town, lordship and priory of St Clears.

Hughes of Ynystawe and one to his daughter, Lady Williams, from the Reverend John Roberts (J.R.), 1878-1884, from the Reverend Samuel Roberts (S.R.), 1872-1879, concerning collections towards Bala Independent College and the Welsh Congregational Chapel at Southwark (some of these latter letters written on the backs of broadsides printed for the writer), and from the Reverend David Williams, Troedrhiwdalar, 1871; also included are notes of addresses delivered by Samuel Roberts.

Gorchestion Beirdd Cymru

A copy of Rhys Jones, Gorchestion Beirdd Cymru ... (1773), with manuscript notes by Edward Charles. Bound with the volume is a manuscript collection of verse in Welsh and English in several hands of the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century, the greater part appearing to have been written by Thomas Humphreys in London. The poems include Cerdd Rowland o'r Pandy i'w gariad, Cywydd marwnad Rhisiart Morys ..., Englynion i'r Eos ... (Caerwys Eisteddfod), and cerddi, cywyddau and englynion by Robert Williams, Thomas Humphreys, Sion ap Rhisiart, Sion Owen o Egryn, Richard Williams, Ed[ward] Puw, Llywelyn Ddu, Mathew Owen, Pedr Gwilym, Iorwerth ap Ioan, Robert Evans, Robyn Ddu, Hugh Llwyd Cynfel, R. J. R. Phillips: Sheriffs of Cardiganshire, etc.

A manuscript in the hand of J. R. Phillips, Ab Geraint, of Cilgerran, author of Memoirs of the Civil War in Wales, and the Marches, etc., consisting of extracts and transcripts, bibliographic lists, historical accounts, etc.
Phillips's list and account of the sheriffs of Cardiganshire (pp. 139-200) was afterwards amplified and printed in 1868.
