Records found in the Gogerddan estate papers relating to various parish churches in Cardiganshire and Machynlleth, Montgomeryshire, 1620-1921, with which the Pryse family were involved, and a small number of papers from two nonconformist chapels in Carno and London, 1812, 1945.

Records of the manor of Genau’r-glyn (Genaur-glyn) , Cardiganshire, belonging to the Pryse family of Gogerddan, who were lords of the manor. The main series comprise chief rentals, [1682]-1894; court leet presentments, 1721-1918; perambulations of the boundaries, 1857-1908; estreats, 1622-1820; affidavits and notices concerning wrecks, 1747-1882; and officers' papers such as appointments of officers, constables’ returns and notices to the bailiff to summon the court leet, 1752-1913. A further series contains assorted papers including a table of court fees, jury lists, a valuation, a constable’s list of estrays, and other documents relating to the administration and the title of the manor, 1729-1913.

They comprise royal appointments to the baronetcy and grants of the name of Pryse or Loveden, 1641-[late 19th cent.], genealogical papers, 1738-1928, sermon books from Cardiganshire and Berkshire parishes, 1747-1853, pocket books of Pryse Pryse, 1760-1803, 1821-1838, manusrctipt poetry and other literature, [1650x1950], printed books and pamphlets, 1714-1912, newspapers and cuttings, 1760-[1925], membership books and papers of various clubs and societies including the freemasons, [post-1804]-1925, Pryse family letters, 1697-1952, and miscellaneous Pryse family papers.1673-1674, 1828-1919. This section reflects the status of the Pryse family, their interests and family relationships. The pocket books of Pryse Pryse supplement the diaries which are listed as NLW Manuscripts (q.v.). The family letters reveal a deep concern over the deteriotating financial position of the estate, leading to a serious decline around the turn of the twentieth century.

Records of the manors of Emlyn Iscych (Emlyn Is Cuch) and Dyffryn Breuan in Pembrokeshire, which had descended to the Pryses of Gogerddan by inheritance from the Lewes family of Abernantbychan, comprising chief rentals, 1742, 1793, 1853-1919; court books and court leet presentments, 1832-1918; accounts and receipts, 1646, 1843-1915; and letters, 1876-1895. The court leet was held at Boncath.

Title deeds and other documents relating to property owned by the Brogyntyn estate in Montgomeryshire, 1647-1902. One series concerns properties of the Penrhos and Cemmes (Cemais) estates, formerly belonging to John Owen, which descended to Mary Jane Ormsby Gore, 1647-1899; another series comprises records of the manors of Broniarth and Deuddwr, 1773-1894. Other deeds concern properties in the township of Broniarth in the parish of Guilsfield, 1740-1885, and at Sarnau in the parish of Meifod, 1828-1902.

Records mainly of the lead, silver and copper mines belonging to the Gogerddan estate in North Cardiganshire, at Allt y Crib, Blaenceulan, Bronfloyd, Bryn yr Afr, the Bog, Camdwr Bach, Camdwr Mawr, Cwmsymlog, Darren, Eaglebrook, Esgair Hir, Esgair Fraith, Hafan and Henfwlch, the Island, Loveden Mine, South Darren, Taliesin and the Vaughan Mines, mainly in the parishes of Llanbadarn Fawr, Llanfihangel Genau’r-glyn and Llangynfelyn, Grogwynion in the parish of Llanafan and numerous other locations. These papers often incorporate records of the stone quarries at Hafan, Cwmere, Pentalwr, Penrhyngerwyn, Penglais and other sites. The various series comprise ore weighing tickets, 1850-1862; tack (take) notes, 1732-1924; bargain books, 1825-1851; miscellaneous Gogerddan mining accounts, 1668-1918; mining ledgers, 1875-1918; mining receipt books, 1897-1918; Gogerddan and East Darren mining cost books and ledgers: 1842-1894; royalty returns, 1774, 1838-1910; leases and agreements, 1656-1918; mining surveys, reports, prospectuses, etc., 1670-1923; letters, 1697-1920; and sale catalogues, 1882-1915.

Household administration papers, mainly from the Gogerddan estate but also occasionally naming London residences occupied by the Pryse family, 1668-1928. They include household accounts, bills and receipts, 1668-1925; household inventories from Gogerddan and London, 1744-1917; recipes, [18th cent.]-1844; and miscellaneous household papers comprising advertisements, medical prescriptions and a visitor book, 1848-1928.

Papers deriving from administration of the Breconshire estates held succcessively by Walter Pryse, Lewis Pryse and Edward Loveden Loveden, situated mainly in the parishes of Llan-gors, Llanfihangel Tal-y-llyn and Llanfihangel Nant Bran, comprising estate rentals, accounts and vouchers, 1740-1826; letters, 1680-1821, and miscellaneous estate administration papers which include Llan-gors timber records, a copy of a seventeenth century survey of Llyn Safaddan and sale particulars, 1705-1805. A substantial proportion of the papers concerns the sale of the Breconshire estates by Edward Loveden Loveden between 1805 and 1807.

Books and papers relating to the borough and county elections in Cardiganshire, in which members of the Pryse family either stood for Parliament themselves or supported another candidate, The series comprise poll books, 1729-1812, [1841x1852.]; freeholders’ books and other electoral registers, 1760-1849; election accounts, [1769]-1871; political and election letters, 1739-1855; and miscellaneous election papers, [1690]-1862. Some of the miscellaneous bundles contain items which elucidate the system of borough administration at Cardigan and Lampeter in addition to the election material,

Records of the Gogerddan estate relating to mining and quarrying in the county of Merioneth, comprising leases of lead mines at Llanelltud and unspecified locations 1699-1702, 1849; and quarrying letters and accounts, 1861-1913

Title deeds and other documents concerning properties purchased or leased by the Brogyntyn estate in the county of Merioneth, 1706-1961. They include a lease and arbitration award for Ty Cerrig, Talsarnau, in the parish of Llanfihangel-y-traethau, 1920-1961; miscellaneous properties in Llandanwg, Llanfihangel-y-traethau, Barmouth, Beddgelert, Harlech and other locations in Merioneth, 1706-1912; and mining and quarrying leases, 1837-1947.

Family settlements, other papers relating to the family trusts, and abstracts of title of the Owen and Ormsby Gore families of Brogyntyn and others related to them by marriage, 1730-1974; and a small number of similar documents relating to trusts of non-family members, 1790-1906.

Letters mainly to the Pryse and Loveden family of Gogerddan, Buscot Park and Woodstock or their representatives, from specific correspondents, namely Charles Deare of the Inner Temple, 1803-1843, James Morse of Carmarthen and others involved in his case, 1831-1855,, and Boys and Tweedie, solicitors, of Ely Place and Lincolns Inn Fields, 1845-1924, whose files have also preserved the outgoing letters originally sent to them by the Pryses. The solicitors’ letters concern mainly the Pryse family settlements and trusts, provision for the family widows and younger children, estate purchases and sales, mortgages, and the financial management of the Buscot Park, Woodstock and Gogerddan estates. The letters and papers of James Morse discuss his case as a defaulter to the Crown but they also provide insights into his career and his involvement in Cardiganshire politics in the mid-nineteenth century. There is also a single file of letters to Charles Hayes, Deputy Governor of the Royal African Company, 1733-1748.

Original schedules of deeds and documents belonging to the Gogerddan estates, compiled in volumes and on loose sheets, 1739-1868; and modern schedules and research material [20th cent.], included here for convenience.

Tenancy agreements and leases (including memoranda and drafts), 1739-1924, for houses and lands situated in the parishes and townships of Eglwys-fach (Ysgubor-y-coed), Llanbadarn Fawr, Llanfihangel Genau’r-glyn, Llangorwen (from 1864), and Llangynfelyn in north Cardiganshire, and Machynlleth in Montgomeryshire. The years 1861 and 1864 each include additional files of arbitration agreements and valuations, and other related documents found with them. There are also numerous notices to quit, both to and by tenants of the estate.

Papers relating to the enclosure of common lands in the lordship of Genau’r-glyn where the Pryse family of Gogerddan held ancient manorial rights, The first series comprises miscellaneous bundles of acts, papers and letters about the enclosure and drainage of Cors Fochno (Borth Bog), 1743-1899. The second series comprises agreements, enclosure awards, valuer’s reports, etc. for the upland areas of the manor of Genau’r-Glyn, including Braich Garw, 1860-1897. The third series is miscellaneous, relating to enclosure and fences in Cardiganshire, Montgomeryshire, Hampshire and Sussex, 1856-1890.

Papers deriving from the leasing and management of the coal mines in Pembrokeshire, held successively by the Lewes family of Abernantbychan, Lewis Pyrse of Woodstock, Edward Loveden Loveden of Buscot Park and their successors in the Pryse family of Gogerddan, 1745-1866. They comprise leases and lease agreements, 1745-1839, accounts, 1753-1866, letters, 1773-1866, and letters and papers relating to the dispute with Lord Milford over Moreton Colliery, 1773-1798. The contents refer mainly to Moreton Colliery in the parish of St Issells near Saundersfoot but also include records from Trevane, Picton Moor, Vadson and Hopshill. There are frequent references to Sir John Philipps of Picton Castle, his son, Sir Richard Philipps (Lord Milford), William Hopkins, Henry Phelps of Norchard, James Child of Begeli and others. Much information is revealed about the practical and economic aspects of coal mining in Pembrokeshire, the individuals involved, the transgressions by other proprietors and the ensuing legal disputes.
