Schedule of papers

Volume intitled 'Inventory of the deeds, papers & books contained in the drawers & closets in the study at Tredegar'. Page headings have been prepared for drawers 1-23, although drawers 10-17 and 23 have no descriptions, and some of the other drawers have very cursory descriptions, including 'Medals & coins' (drawer 5), 'Miscellaneous articles & curiosities' (drawer 6) and 'Map book of the Breconshire estate & book of reference thereto' (drawer 19). The deeds and other documents are in the range 1500-1843, and on p. 12 is a note initialled by Octavius Morgan, 20 Sept. 1846. -- Loose papers include 'New arrangements of the contents of the drawers & cupboards in the study at Tredegar', [watermark 1832], which appears to agree with the arrangement of the drawers in the volume, and a list of deeds and papers relating to the estate in Monmouthshire and Glamorgan, delivered by Frederick Justice to Sir Charles Morgan, 14 Feb. 1845, annotated with drawer numbers, although these deeds do not appear to have been noted in the volume.

Record of deeds passed at the Tredegar estate office, giving the name of the lessee, where the premises are situated, the plot number (those with plot numbers are probably building leases), and the dates when the deed was received for examination, when passed, and when the counterpart was handed over.

Estate map reference book

Volume intitled 'References to the book of maps of the estates of John Morgan esquire within the counties of Brecon Monmouth and Glamorgan, surveyed in the years 1781, 1782, by Edward Thomas, landsurveyor, Margam.' The references are to holdings in Garthbrengi, Glasbury, Llandyfalle, Llys-wen, Palleg and Ystradgynlais in Breconshire, Abergavenny, Llanwenarth, Machen, Mynyddislwyn, St Woolloos and Trefethin in Monmouthshire, and Coychurch, Llys-faen and Rhydri in Glamorgan. The references include the map number, from I to XX, the reference number, name, tenant and acreage of the holding, and the reference number, name, quality (arable, pasture etc.) and acreage of the individual fields. -- There are no annotations, suggesting that this was not a working copy of the reference book. With the exception of St Woolloos, there is no overlap between the parishes in this book and in AES 4/4, suggesting that this cannot be the reference book to the "Great Book" of maps referred to there.

The references are to holdings in Abergavenny, Llanwenarth, Machen, Mynyddislwyn, St Woolloos and Trefethin in Monmouthshire, and Coychurch, Llys-faen and Rhydri in Glamorgan. This volume is effectively a copy of the references for maps VII to XX as found in AES 4/1, with the exception that the current volume does not give references for map IX, beyond saying 'The lands contained in map no. 9 were sold to Henry Williams Esq'r of Crickhowell in the year 1783 pursuant to a contract made between him and the late Hugh Janes Esq'r in 1776. The map delivered to Mr Williams.'
