Viscount Tenby Papers,

The archive group includes a file of Lloyd George family correspondence, 1902-1945, and general correspondence, 1906-1941, addressed to David Lloyd George, which complements similar groups of letters in other archive groups. There is a volume of correspondence and memoranda, 1916-1917, proposing possible solutions to the problem of home rule for Ireland, a volume of notes in the hand of David Lloyd George, and three memoranda books kept by Lloyd George between c. 1912 and 1916. There is also a group of the papers of Sir Goronwy Owen (1882-1963), the Liberal (later Independent Liberal) MP for the Caernarfonshire constituency, 1923-1945, and a brother-in-law to Gwilym Lloyd-George. There is a rich array of letters to Gwilym Lloyd-George, 1931-1963, and notes, papers and correspondence deriving from his career, c. 1927-1950, including many concerning his work at the ministries of food and fuel and power. There is also the draft of an unpublished autobiography by him.

Gwilym Lloyd George and others

The Irish question,

Letters and memoranda, 1916-17, proposing possible solutions to the problem of home rule for Ireland and produced in anticipation of the Irish Convention summoned by D. Lloyd George in 1917-18. Most of the contributions are by individuals not directly involved in politics; they include a 'Memorandum Concerning the Present and Future Relations of Great Britain and Ireland in the Empire', drawn up by the poet and mystic, George William Russell ('A. E.') and several others (ff. 41-62).

The coal industry,

Correspondence and papers relating to Lloyd George's proposals on the coal industry, 1935. Correspondents include Sir Richard Redmayne and J. E. Emlyn-Jones.

Speeches,

DLlG and Margaret LlG speeches and notes for speeches, numbered 2140-2169, many incomplete, about half of them by DLlG. A couple of items are in unidentified hands. No. 2166 is by Megan LlG. No. 2169 is made up of fragments of speeches, mostly by DLlG.

Speeches,

Due to pressure of time at the time of sorting, the speeches were numbered with little regard for chronology. Since many of the speeches are dateable the volumes have been provided with tables for suggested dates.

Speeches,

DLlG speeches and notes for speeches, many incomplete, numbered 2103-2139. The arrangement within this and the next volume is not satisfactory (cf. introductory note); the tables of suggested dates should reduce inconvenience. No 2136 is by Margaret LlG.

Satirical rhymes,

Satirical rhymes on parliamentary matters and personalities, numbered 2197-2234, mostly written on the back of order papers and seat cards. They appear to be the work of Sir Wilfred Lawson: they are quite in the vein of his rhymes; his signature is on one of the seat cards; the hand-writing seems to be his (cf. Ellis Papers, nos 1364-5). Many are endorsed by DLlG with a note of the debate which prompted them, and date.

Political papers,

Political papers of DLlG, numbered 2170-2196. These include the report of an interview with Sir Edgar Spayer relating to the Port of London Bill, 21 Aug. [1907] (2174), Asquith's notes for his speech in the House on the Irish Settlement, 10 July 1916 (2177), decypher of telegram announcing abdication of the Czar, with endorsed note by Balfour, 15 March 1917 (2178), further memorandum by the Irish delegates, 29 Oct. 1921 (2181), medical report on Terence McSwiney, 22 Oct. 1920 (2183), papers relating to the dismissal of Miss Douglas-Pennant as Commandant of the Women's Royal Air Force, 1918 (2184), and papers relating to the 1922 general election (2187-2192). The remainder is largely printed matter.

Papers relating to Mair Eluned Lloyd George,

Correspondence and papers, 1898-1909, relating to Mair Eluned Lloyd George, Lloyd George's eldest daughter, who died in 1907, aged 17, including letters from Mair Eluned to her parents (5) 1898-1907, and letters, poems and press cuttings relating to her death.

Papers of Sir Goronwy Owen

Owen family papers,

Owen family papers, numbered 3241-3322, mostly relating to Richard Owen, 1855-1903. They include several bills of sale and other documents connected with ownership of shares in ships. No. 3289 is a receipt to Margaret LlG, 1913, for a share in a vessel being built at Porthmadog.

Olwen Lloyd George letters,

Letters numbered 3081-3126, to Olwen LlG (later Carey Evans). Nos 3081-122 are from her mother, all but two of them in the years 1922-3 when Major and Mrs Carey Evans were in India; these letters are more expansive than most of the family letters in the collection. Nos 3123-4 are from her father, 1902. No. 3125 is from Lord Reading, 1923.
