Vavasor Powel and others: Poetry

A volume containing religious poetry in various 17th century hands. It is possible that the greater portion of the book (pp. 9-132) is in the hand of Vavasor Powel, though his name does not occur anywhere; the poem entitled The Lamentation of Jeremiah (p. 14), for example, was by Powel and was printed in a slightly different form in The Bird in the Cage (1662). A considerable amount of the poetry was composed after 1660, while the author was in prison. Daniel Lloyd of Wrexham (d. 1656), to whose memory two elegies have been written (pp. 101-2), was a friend of Vavasor Powel.

Trysor o Ddifinyddiaeth gan Griffith Jones, Llanddowror

This volume, the fifth, contains sermons on the Epistles of Paul to the Romans, Corinthians, Galatians and Ephesians. The manuscript is said to have been 'copied by the Rev. Evan Evans, curate of Llanddowror and incumbent of Walton, Pembrokeshire' (nineteenth-century note, p. iii), however the curate of Llanddowror at the time was Thomas Evans, in whose hand are written the title page and contents (pp. v-xii). The (unidentified) copyist of the main text finished transcribing the sermons on 8 January 1763 (p. 773). A list of the places where the Rev. Griffith Jones preached appears on p. 781.
