Letters to Myvanwy Rhys

Letters, 1893-1945, addressed to Myvanwy Rhys from her sister, Olwen, 1911-1945 (mostly 1945), and various correspondents. Some letters are addressed to both sisters, and a few may have been sent solely to Olwen Rhys. Many relate to the proposed biography of John Rhŷs. Included are letters from A. E. Also included are four letters to John Rhŷs, [1875x1876], from William Stokes (ff. 365-368); three letters, 1875, 1893, and undated, from Margaret Stokes (ff. 369-372); a copy of The Irish passages in the Stowe Missal (Calcutta, 1881), edited by Whitley Stokes (ff. 373-386), together with Charles Plummer's article, 'Notes on the Stowe Missal' (1885) (ff. 387-390), and three letters, 1883, addressed to Charles Plummer from Whitley Stokes (ff. 391-395).

Folder A1/3/5(i) comprises letters dated between July 1871 and August 1894 (foliated 1-87); folder A1/3/5(ii) comprises letters dated between September 1895 and January 1909, and undated (foliated 88-151); bundle A1/3/5(iii) comprises cards dated between September 1874 and October 1887 (foliated 152-215); bundle A1/3/5(iv) comprises cards dated between November 1887 and November 1895 (foliated 216-284); and bundle A1/3/5(v) comprises cards dated between November 1895 and January 1909 (foliated 285-364). The rest of the material is placed in folder A1/3/5(vi) and foliated 365-414.

Forty three notebooks, 1873-1915, the majority of which are numbered and labelled with a list of contents, recording inscribed stones examined by John Rhŷs mostly in Wales, the Isle of Man, Scotland, and Ireland. They contain descriptions of his journeys, of stones and inscriptions, folklore and other related notes. Also included are unbound diaries of 'ogham hunts', 1883-1899.
