The archive described here comprises papers formerly known as the Roland Mathias MSS (originally placed on deposit at NLW and converted to a donation in 1994), together with donations, 1993-2003. It includes mostly correspondence, and papers relating to The Anglo-Welsh Review, his literary works, and professional career as a teacher and headmaster. Also included is a group of personal and family papers, together with works by Dora Polk.

An additional collection of the papers of Roland Mathias, including correspondence, articles, notes and other materials. This group remains uncatalogued.

Miscellaneous papers

Miscellaneous papers, 1943-1986 (with gaps), mostly printed material, which mainly reflect Roland Mathias's interests, including press cuttings, 1954-1981 (with gaps), among which are articles by his son Glyn Mathias. The file also contains a notebook of poetry and 'notable pieces of descriptive prose' by numerous writers, transcribed by Roland Mathias, [1935x1960], and illustrated with cuttings from postcards; loose pages containing diary entries for 1961 during his sabbatical term at Balliol College, Oxford (a review of Border country by Raymond Williams is attached), and 1987; papers and notes pertaining to his visit to Brittany, 1970; and a copy of the script 'Drops from the Crochan', 1982, produced by the Usk Valley Project, in which Roland Mathias played the part of Joseph.

Manuscript notes of Welsh exercises, 1942, by Roland Mathias corrected by his father. Also included is a notebook containing sermons by the Rev. Evan Mathias, [1930x1960]; and manuscript and typescript notes by him, 1960, together with research papers, concerning the history of New Inn Congregational Chapel, Monmouthshire.

Honorary degree

Papers relating to the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters, honoris causa awarded to Roland Mathias by the University of Georgetown, 1985. Also included is a leaflet regarding Georgetown University Alumni College, 1987.

Jesus College, Oxford

The file comprises a notebook which contains notes by Roland Mathias whilst at Oxford, [1933x1938], and lecture notes, 1944-1951. Also included is correspondence, 1931-1936, including letters from Roland Mathias, and letters congratulating him on his first class honours degree, 1936, together with miscellaneous papers (this bundle includes some items pertaining to Caterham School). In addition, the file contains notes relating to Roland Mathias's dissertation, 'The Economic Policy of the Board of Trade 1696-1714', 1936-1938; cuttings from the Jesus College magazine, 1933-1938; and letters, notes and printed leaflets relating to the Oxford University Students' Campaign, 1934, to promote the Christian faith.

The file contains cuttings from the Caterham School magazine, 1926-1938. Also included are essays by Roland Mathias, 1930-1933, whilst at Caterham and Jesus College, Oxford; together with reports, fees and receipts, 1925-1938, mostly relating to his schooldays (with some pertaining to his time at Jesus College); and a school prospectus, [1936-1940].

Correspondence, 1947-1981 (with gaps), including draft letters by Roland Mathias, with mainly former pupils and mostly regarding testimonials by him. Curriculum vitae and application forms are occasionally enclosed with letters.

King Edward's Five Ways School

Miscellaneous papers, 1963-1968, relating to the King Edward's Five Ways School, Birmingham, where Roland Mathias served as Headmaster between 1964 and 1969, including printed school lists, 1963-1968. Also included are drafts of a report on his sabbatical term at University College, Swansea, [1967].

Herbert Strutt School, Belper

Miscellaneous papers, 1958, 1962 and 1964, relating to the Herbert Strutt School, Belper, Derbyshire, where Roland Mathias served as Headmaster between 1958 and 1964, including typescript copies of the 'Founder's Day Report', 1962. Also included are related newspaper cuttings, 1959x1966; and a report by Roland Mathias following his Schoolmaster-Studentship at Balliol College, 1961.

Pembroke Dock Grammar School

The file contains various papers relating to Pembroke Dock Grammar School, 1949-[?1959], including printed copies of the school's reports, 1953-1957, and copies of The Penvro, 1954-1958; together with manuscript and typescript copies of articles printed in The Penvro, 1949-1958, which appear to have been written by Roland Mathias; programmes for various events, including the ceremonial opening of the school, 1955, and prize-giving ceremonies, notes for speeches and an article, 'The Grammar School, Pembroke: an experiment in education for agriculture', 1955-1958.

Cowley, Carlisle & St Clement Danes Schools

The file contains cuttings from the magazine The Cowleian, 1938-1941; together with cuttings from the Carlisle Grammar School magazine The Carliol, 1945-1946; and material relating to the St Clement Danes Holborn Estate Grammar School, including incomplete copies of the magazine The Dane, 1946-1949. Also included is a typescript copy of the 'Account-book of the management of Sarah Cowley's estate', [1942], which appears to have been used for an article by Roland Mathias on the Cowley Trust; a transcript of Sarah Cowley's will, and notes relating to the history of St Helens and Lancashire, 1932, [1938x1942].

The file includes photocopies of stories by Geraint Goodwin, [c. 1975], together with a copy of the book The white farm & other stories (Bath, 1968), which appear to have been used by Sam Adams and Roland Mathias whilst editing The collected short stories of Geraint Goodwin (Tenby, 1976).

The shining pyramid

The file contains papers, c. 1969, relating to The shining pyramid and other stories by Welsh authors, edited by Sam Adams and Roland Mathias (Llandysul, 1970), namely galley and page proofs of the book, together with mostly photocopies of stories included in the volume and typescript drafts of 'Acknowledgements', 'Introduction' and 'Notes on the authors'.

The file mainly comprises typescript drafts, [1977]-1985, of some of the articles which appeared in A ride through the wood : essays on Anglo-Welsh literature, (Bridgend, 1985), including essays on David Jones, Alun Lewis, and Emyr Humphreys. Also included is a reprint of the article 'David Jones - towards the 'holy diversities'' from Transactions of the Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion (1981); and a printed copy of the Annual Gwyn Jones lecture, The lonely editor: a glance at Anglo-Welsh magazines (Cardiff, 1984).
