Correspondence (nineteen letters) and notes, November-December 1840, relating to proposals for establishing fox hunting in co. Montgomery. The correspondence includes letters from J. Robinson Jones, Welshpool, to R[ichar]d Griffiths Parry, W[elsh] Pool (soliciting recipient's company at a meeting to be held at Welshpool, 9 November, to consider proposals relating to fox hunting in the county) (autograph), and [Edward Herbert, 7th earl of] Powis (enclosing a copy of the resolutions passed at the aforementioned meeting held 9 November, viz., that a subscription be 'set on foot in aid of the intended establishment of The Montgomeryshire Fox Hounds', that a committee be formed in connection therewith, that the committee should solicit the support of the earl of Powis and other landed proprietors in the county, that John Buckley Williams be appointed master of the fox hounds, that Tho[ma]s Bowen and Alfred Meredith be treasurer and secretary respectively, etc.) (holograph draft); a letter from John Vaughan, Crosswood, to J. Robinson Jones, Welsh Pool (an offer by the writer to lend his hounds to the gentlemen of the county for the remainder of the season) (holograph); a copy of a circular letter addressed by the aforesaid Alfred Meredith (as secretary), from Welch-Pool [to landed proprietors in the county] (informing recipients of the meeting held 9 November, soliciting subscriptions, requesting permission to draw recipients' coverts); and fifteen holograph letters, eight of which are addressed to Alfred Meredith, and the remainder of which were also, by inference, intended for him, from Fra[nci]s Allen, Pool, P. Devereux, Llanfair, Tho[ma]s Edgworth, Wrexham (on behalf of the Rev[eren]d N. Roberts, Cefn Park, near Wrexham), John Edmunds, Edderton, the Rev[erend] G[eorge] A[rthur] Evors, Newtown, J[ohn] R[alph] Ormsby Gore [aft. 1st baron Harlech], Porkington, the Rev[eren]d J[ohn] A[rthur] Herbert, Glan Hafren, Rob[ert] Lightbody, Pant, R[obert] M[aurice] Bonnor Maurice, Preston, Cirencester, W[illia]m Morris, Pentre pant, R[ichard] H[erbert] Mytton, The Derwin, J. M. Severne, Wallop Hall (2), Sir R[obert] W [illiames] Vaughan [2nd bart. of] Nannau, and J. B. Williames, Pennant (replies to the circular sent out by recipient). The notes, dated ?26 December 1840, are in the hand of the earl of Powis, and give the substance of a conversation between the writer and representatives of the hunt committee, concerning the drawing of coverts on the Powis estate.

Thirty holograph letters from Alfred B[utler] Clough [Fellow of Jesus College, Oxford, 1817-1839, and rector of Braunston, co. Northampton, 1838- 1870] from Jesus College (27), from Chester (1) and from Minydon [Colwyn, co. Denbigh] (2), to the Reverend [Richard] Howard [D.D., rector of Denbigh, 1818-1843, rector of Llandegfan with Beaumaris, 1826-1843, etc.] at Beaumaris, 1832-1839 (the writer's opinion of a former student, Evan Pughe [? of Llanfihangel Genau'r Glyn, co. Cardigan, vicar of Llanidloes, 1837-1850] (1832); the intention of the Conservatives at Oxford [University] to propose [Arthur Wellesley, 1st] duke of Wellington, as candidate for the chancellorship, his election to the said office unopposed, comments on his character, etc., the writer's inclination to leave Oxford, comments on the conduct and suitability for orders of W[ ] Ll[ ] Williams (1834); the winning of the English essay prize at Rugby school by Arthur [Hugh Clough, 1819-1861, the poet], visits to and the progress being made by Dick [? Richard Henry Howard, recipient's son, then a student at Oxford] who had broken his leg, visits by the patient's friends, the cost of medical attention and other expenses incurred in connection with the accident, comments on the parliamentary situation (1835); a rumour that Sir Robert [? Williames Vaughan of Nannau, 2nd bart.] intended resigning his seat as member of parliament for the county [of Merioneth] and that his son had refused the nomination, a fire at Baron Hill [co. Anglesey], a visit to town by Dick [see above] to see the University boat race (1836); attempts to find a place for Manners [? Robert Manners Howard, recipient's son, ob. 1839] at Oxford, his admission to Oriel College and news of him subsequent to his admission, the writer's activities whilst on a visit to North Wales including stays at Hengwrt and Nannau, a flattering account of Arthur [Hugh Clough] by Dr. [Thomas] Arnold [headmaster of Rugby school], comments on some of the candidates for vacancies at All Souls [College, Oxford], arrangements for appointing to the curacy of Beaumaris and comments on some possible candidates including [ ] Davies, schoolmaster at Denbigh, [the Reverend] Robert Jones who had a church at Golftyn [co. Flint], and David Roberts, nephew of [the incumbent of] Whitford, the writer's correspondence with the Welsh bishops regarding a new edition of the Welsh Folio Bible and Prayer Book and the setting up by the [Oxford] Delegates of a subcommittee to estimate the expense and to discuss arrangements, a meeting of convocation at Oxford to consider the revision of the statutes of the University, the possibility of obtaining the curacy of Gresford [co. Denbigh], vacant by the preferment of [the Reverend] Matthew Hughes to Llandyssilio [co. Denbigh], for Dick [see above] (1837)). The letters also contain throughout a considerable amount of news of the writer's social and other activities at Oxford, and news of and enquiries concerning relatives and mutual friends or acquaintances.

Jones, Stockwell, to Morgan Davies [?the same as in the preceding letter] at Sir Rob[er]t W[illia]m Vaughan, M.P., London, 1812 (enclosing a copy of verses entitled 'Cerdd Miss Forgans fawr o Blas y Coed' by J[ohn] Jones, [Jack] Glan y Gors), W. Jones to Evan Lewis, Dolgellau [1825] ( enclosing 'englynion' in memory of the Reverend R[ichard] Hughes, rector of Dolgellau), D[avid] Thomas ['Dafydd Ddu Eryri'] from Waunfawr and Llandwrog school, to Morgan Dafydd, Lady Williams's footman, Nannau [see the first two letters above], 1808 (the epitaph of Edward Jones, servant of Paul Panton of Plas Gwyn, Anglesey, and Bagillt, co. Flint), and ? to a recipient at Nannau, 1817 ('englynion' on the tombstone of a young man who died at Llanrwst, 1817), and [John Thomas] 'Eifionydd' to [ ], [18]87 (a promise to send recipient a booklet on Caernarvon Castle, thanks for a copy of a poem by Lewis Moris, the writer's wish to borrow the text of a talk on Llanrhaiadr by [Robert Ellis] 'Cynddelw', and any other manuscripts in recipient's possession); holograph copies or transcripts of Welsh poems in strict and free metres, some unattributed and some by Lewis Moris ['Llewelyn Ddu o Fôn'], William Jeffreys ('Gwilym Ffraid'), Dafydd Thomas [?'Dafydd Ddu Eryri'], ?Robert Davies ('Bardd Nantglyn'), and [John Cain Jones] 'Siôn Cain alias Siôn Ceiriog', the titles including the following - 'Englynion i Samuel Jones, Adarwr i Syr Robt. W. Fychan o Nannau . . .', 'I anerch Morgan Dafydd, Clochydd Llanelltyd', 'Englynion i gell gymysg y Parch. Roger Cloug[h]', and 'Glan Geirionydd'; holograph copies or transcripts of English poems including poems entitled 'To Wales' (by W. P., Llanfyllin, 1821), 'Thoughts suggested by the wonderful Contrast and variety Exhibited in the works of Nature throughout the principality (of Wales) and Especially in the vicinity of Snowdon' (by T. W. S., 1813), 'Lines Supposed to have been written by . . . Lieut. R. S. Gamage after his Condemnation', and 'Ye Petition of ye court-martial of Admiral Byng'; and a copy of an English carol by Walter Davies [? 'Gwallter Mechain'] headed 'Carol Plygen ar Ffarwel Ned Puw yn Saesoneg'.

Inside the lower cover is a printed announcement of the formation of Chester Cymmrodorion Society, 1822.
