Transcript of Bishop Vaughan's copy of the Extenta Terrarum, otherwise the Black Book of St Davids, made under the direction of the eminent antiquarian Rev. H. T. Payne during his time as Rector of Llanbedr. The actual contents are identical to those included in item 3 in the 1934 list (reg. no. 170,320), but the two volumes differ in that certain memoranda have been added before the transcription. These date variously from 1516 to 1695, and as Bishop Vaughan held office from 1509 to 1523, it would appear that some of these additions, including an Act to confirm the Liberties of the Lord Marchers in Wales, 1535-6, were added to his copy after his death. This particular copy contains extensive notes to certain entries, an abstract of valuations, and an index. Of particular note is a discussion on the admeasurement of land, noting customary usage in certain parts of the diocese, and describing the units of measurement used, e.g., plough land, ox land, forest pole, etc. This item was previously listed as item 64 in WCC List 7 (Cover damaged).
