History

John ab William (alive 1690) of Llanbadarn Fawr, Cardiganshire, gent., held lands in that parish that appear to have been acquired by his father in 1622, and which remained with the family until at least 1871. His son William John, or Jones (alive 1690), was the first to use a surname.

The estate pased from father to son for another three generations, all called William Jones. The following three generations included their mother's maiden names, William Tilsley Jones (1782-1861), William Basil Tickell Jones (1822-1897), bishop of St Davids, and William Basil Loxdale Jones (1890-1918, dsp). The estate was inherited by the latter's two sisters, Audrey Dorothea Loxdale Jones (d. c.1951), and Gwladys Mary Loxdale Griffin (1889-1977), wife of Rev John Alfred Griffin (1871-1937). Gwynfryn itself was sold in the 1940s.
