UK campaign director for the UN International Year of Shelter for the Homeless, 1984-1987. Public affairs consultant/lobbyist, 1988-1993 and 1997-2002. Liberal candidate for Gillingham (Kent) in the 1987 general election. Head of Public Affairs for the BBC, 1993-1996. One of the founders of the Yes campaign in the Welsh devolution referendum, 1997. Labour AM for Rhondda, 2003-2016, including Minister for Children, Education & Lifelong Learning, 2009-2011, Minister for Education & Skills, 2011-2013, and Minister for Public Services, 2014-2016.

Papers of Leighton Andrews, including material relating to his time in the National Assembly; material relating to his early career, including at the BBC; correspondence with various public figures, including Lord Scarman; and material relating to the 1997 Yes for Wales campaign.

Appraisal, destruction and scheduling

Duplicates of election leaflets were offered to NLW, Welsh political ephemera collection, with excess leaflets weeded.

Most of the papers were received loose or in insecure files. Surviving original files have been preserved, while loose material has been arranged by subject. The files are arranged chronologically.

Video tapes, audio tapes, compact discs and dictaphone tapes have been transferred to MabLab. Photographs relating to the UN International Year of Shelter for the Homeless, 1987, and the 2003 Welsh Assembly election, have been transferred to NLW photographic collection. A "Say yes for Wales=Dwedwch ie dros Cymru" T-shirt signed "To Leighton. Best wishes, Ron Davies", 1997, has been transferred to NLW conservation unit (Leighton Andrews 30).
