Yn ystod haf 1983 gwahoddwyd y cerflunydd John Meirion Morris i ddarlithio ar ei waith mewn cynhadledd a gynhelid gan yr Academi. O'r trafodaethau hynny fe gododd y syniad o gael grŵp o bobl o fyd celfyddyd weledol at ei gilydd i drafod eu gwaith trwy gyfrwng y Gymraeg. Bu trafodaeth ar berthynas y grŵp hwn â'r Academi ac ar ôl peth ystyriaeth penderfynwyd ceisio ffurfio Cymdeithas Gymraeg i Artistiaid. Cynhaliwyd y gynhadledd hon yn Aberystwyth dan nawdd yr Academi ar 9-10 Tachwedd 1984, pryd ffurfiwyd Gweled. Fe fu perthynas bur agos rhwng Gweled a'r Academi a threfnwyd nifer o gynadleddau ar y cyd rhwng y ddwy gymdeithas nes i Gweled ddod i ben ym 1998.
