L/Sgt Idwal Lloyd Pugh (1919-1981) was born 15 March 1919 in Aberystwyth, the third son of Thomas and Mary Anne Pugh of Goginan. He joined the Royal Engineers in the autumn of 1939 and served in France and the Middle East. He was captured by the Germans on 1 June 1941, during military operations in Crete. By early 1942 he was at Stalag IIID, near Berlin, and was later moved to Stalag IVB. Following his return to Wales he married Enid Williams; they had one son, David Anthony Pugh (b. 1953). Idwal Pugh worked at the County Treasurer’s Office in Cardiff before moving to Anglesey in about 1956, retiring in 1974 from the post of County Treasurer of Anglesey. He died on holiday in California on 6 June 1981.
