History

David Samuel (Dewi o Geredigion), schoolmaster and writer, was born in Aberystwyth and graduated from Clare College, Cambridge in 1879. In 1887 he opened a private grammar school at Aberystywth and, in 1896, was appointed headmaster of Ardwyn, the town's new county school. Under the influence of Daniel Silvan Evans, David Samuel cultivated a great interest in the Welsh language and Welsh literature and contributed a great many articles to Welsh periodicals. He adjudicated at eisteddfodau and served as examiner on behalf of Gorsedd y Beirdd, and also edited a collection of Welsh ballads entitled Cerddi Cymru (Caernarfon, 19--).
