History

John Morris-Jones, 1864-1929, was a scholar and a poet. His papers also reveal that he was a popular literary adjudicator on the Eisteddfod scene.

He attended schools at Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll, Anglesey; Bangor, Gwynedd (Friars) and Brecon before winning a scholarship to Jesus College, Oxford where he graduated in Mathematics in 1887. In 1889 he joined the University College of North Wales as a lecturer and was appointed Professor of Welsh in 1895. He was knighted in 1918.
