History
Established in 1780 as a 'society of gentlemen', it was known by 1838 as the 'St. David's Club'. In 1888, the name was changed to the 'Queen's Club', reverting in 1890 to the 'St. David's Club'. The society provided funds for local needs such as grants for widows or those made destitute, and in 1843 bought Aberystwyth its first lifeboat.
