Note

Stanley William (Stan) Tracey, jazz pianist and composer, was born in London in 1926. He started his professional musical career aged sixteen playing accordion as a member of the Entertainments National Service Organisation (ENSA) during the Second World War. He led his own octet from 1976 to 1985, formed a sextet in 1979 and a quartet in 1995. In 2003 he was the subject of a BBC documentary entitled The Godfather of British Jazz. He died in 2013. Tracey considered his major influences to be Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk. His best-known recording was probably the 1965 album Jazz Suite Inspired By Dylan Thomas' 'Under Milk Wood'. His son is the jazz drummer, band leader and composer Clark Tracey.
