Scope and content

The Welsh Quoits Archive, comprising material relating to British quoiting, the majority of the material relating to quoiting in Wales, including: match programmes, posters and flyers, match listings and statistics; rules and regulations of quoiting; press cuttings relating to quoiting matches, quoiting clubs and club members; newsletters; correspondence between quoiting clubs, between individual club members and between clubs and members of the public; items relating to notable quoiting club occasions such as centenaries and anniversaries; and miscellaneous material relating to quoiting, including information relating to the history of the game. The bulk of the material relates to quoiting in Wales, mainly involving international matches (the majority of which were against Scotland) played on Welsh soil. One particularly notable item is a copy of a printed booklet titled The History of Quoits in Wales by Albert Baker (published by J. R. Davies in 1949), which is enclosed with a letter, 14 December 2000, to Linda Evans, Joint Secretary of the Welsh Quoiting Board, from Darryl Baker, grandson of the author (see under heading Quoiting: Wales: Correspondence: Letters to Linda Evans).

Note

The game of quoits may date back to ancient Greece and was possibly related to the sport of discus-throwing (see, for example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discobolus). Quoiting 'involves the throwing of metal, rope or rubber rings over a set distance, usually to land over or near a spike (sometimes called a hob, mott or pin)'. Variations on the game are played in different areas of Britain: for example, the 'long game', or the 'old game', is played in Wales and Scotland. The Scottish quoit clubs are now reduced to one, based in Stonehaven, whilst Wales has a few remaining clubs, most of which are located in Powys and in the former county of Dyfed. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quoits).

Caersws Quoits Club was first referenced in 1932; however, no club records exist between 1940 and 1970. The club's first International match, between Wales and Scotland, took place at Caersws's Greenlands site in 1979. Two of Caersws Quoits Club's most prolific players were Brendon Lloyd and Russell Owen, who represented Wales twenty-one and ten times, respectively. The retirement of these last two surviving players in 2021 signaled the demise of Caersws Quoits Club. (http://www.ukquoits.org/page335.html)
