History

W. Pencerdd Williams was well known in the musical circles of Llangollen and the surrounding area, especially in his role as conductor of the Llangollen Choral Society.

Born in 1856 at Erw Wen, on the outskirts of Llangollen, he remained in the area throughout his life. A teacher of music, he was also an examiner for the Tonic Solfa College, London, and often adjudicated at local Eisteddfodau. He conducted at singing festivals ('Cymanfaoedd Canu') and was conductor of the successful Llangollen Choral Society for many years. He was the father of W. S. Gwynn Williams, first musical director of the Llangollen International Eisteddfod. He died in 1924.
