HFJ had connections with the media from an early age, through his apprenticeship at the Seren Office, Bala. During the years prior to the Second World War, he wrote a weekly column entitled 'A Welsh Causerie' for the North Wales Weekly News, under the pseudonym 'Tegid'. He also wrote for, and corresponded with, several newspapers, as well as accumulating large quantities of press cuttings on a variety of topics. His work with the media included writing and presenting BBC radio programmes relating to local history, including gypsies.
