System of arrangement
In order to avoid confusion with previous groups, it was decided (in 1986) to divide the papers listed here into 17 classes, designated A-H, J-N, P, R-T. The papers in Classes A to K relate to a number of members of the Rendel and Goodhart families; those in Classes L to T concern Sir George William Rendel (1889-1979), diplomat and public servant, and father of MIss Rosemary Rendel. Papers of Rosemary Rendel were designated Class V. When the cataloguing of the papers had been completed in June 1986, a further group of papers was deposited, these included five letters Lewis Rendel, now designated Class U. Later deposits included miscellaneous material, designated Class X.
