Tom Macdonald's African stories deal with varying aspects of life in Africa, from the city life and apartheid system of Johannesburg to the wilderness of Portuguese East Africa. Stories nos 131, 150, 154 and 163 were published between 1965 and 1973 in various magazines. Story no. 144 was written for a competition under the nom de plume 'Leribe'; and stories nos 205 and 210 were written under the name of Michael Jason. Stories nos 149 and 190 were written by Tom Macdonald as told to him by Harry Manners. They correspond to chapters from the novel 'Wild Eden' (nos 54-61). Story no. 151 corresponds to a chapter from the novel 'Son of Morning' (nos 19-20). Story no. 191 contains a letter (1968) concerning its publication, and there is a letter concerning the publication of stories nos 163 and 150 on the dorse of no. 172.
