A notebook ('Ballads Index Book 2') in the hand of J. H. Davies containing a short list of titles of Welsh ballads. Beginning at the end is an imperfect (1859-61 only) transcript of a list of contents, with authors' names, of Y Beirniad, 1859-79, - 'Enwau Awduron Erthyglau yn y Beirniad 1859-79 a godwyd o ysgriflyfr y Parchedig J. B. Jones, B. A.'.

A scrap-book of press cuttings of Cardiganshire interest. The titles include 'Y Parch. Phiup [sic] Pugh a'i Amserau' (attributed in the hand of J. H. Davies to D. Worthington, with the comment that 'This article is wrong in nearly every detail'), 'Some Old Records of Cardiganshire', 'Cymru Fu' ('Grand Jurors for 1732', 'An old Revenue Conflict in Cardiganshire', 'Old Welsh Ballads', 'Extracts from Gaol Files', 'The First Press in Wales', and 'The Manor of Perfedd...'), 'Glimpses of Aberystwyth in Shakespeare's Time' by E. A notebook in the hand of J. H. Davies containing an annotated list of printed Welsh ballads in the J. D. Lewis (Llandysul) collection (John David Lewis; 1859-1914).

Catalogue of Welsh ballads,

An interleaved volume (385 pp.) belonging to J. H. Davies made up of pages from Y Traethodydd, 1886-92 ('Hen Gerddi y Cymry', a catalogue of Welsh ballads compiled by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'), with pages 346-50 from Revue Celtique, II (part of a supplement [by D. Silvan Evans] to Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry). There are numerous additions and annotations by J. H. Davies, including cross-references to his own Bibliography of Welsh ballads printed in the 18th century (London, 1911) and an index to the authors, etc. of the pre-1800 ballads in the 'Myrddin Fardd' catalogue. The numbers used in the index correspond to the numbers in the 'Myrddin Fardd' catalogue while the page references are to the pages in the present volume. Loose inside are a list of ballads, etc. by Thomas Edwards ('Twm o'r Nant'), Hugh Jones, Llangwm and Ellis Roberts, with number or page references as before, and a letter, 1908, from D. Rhys Phillips, Swansea to [J. H. Davies] (jottings on three Shrewsbury 'effusions').

The letters, 1900-1925, concern books, publishing, printing and librarianship matters. Many of the letters relate to the publication of J. H. Davies's Bibliography of Welsh Ballads. Some concern the affairs of the Welsh Bibliographical Society or the Carmarthen Antiquarian Society, and some derive from D. Rhys Phillips's work as Welsh Librarian at Swansea.

Most of the letters, 1899-1926, concern research and publishing matters and the affairs of the Honourable Society of Cymmrodorion and its meetings. Many of the letters discuss the preparation and publication of Davies's Bibliography of Welsh Ballads and various articles and notes. There are occasional references to the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, and to the establishment of the National Library of Wales.

A notebook in the hand of J. H. Davies, 21 October 1891, containing notes of lectures by O. M. Edwards [at Lincoln College, Oxford] on constitutional history. Beginning at the end is a home-made thumb-nail glossary by J. H. Davies partly of words in the poetry of Tudur Aled and partly of Welsh ballads recorded under authors' surnames or first lines.

Two notebooks containing transcripts of titles of Welsh ballads ('Hen Faledau Cymraeg') contained in Books I - IV of 'Llyfrau Cerddi' in the collection of W. J. Roberts ('Gwilym Cowlyd'), 1896. There are some annotations, partly in the hand of J. H. Davies, and in the majority of cases the corresponding numbers in J. H. Davies: A Bibliography of Welsh Ballads ... (London, 1911) have been inserted.

Three notebooks [in the hand of J. T. Evans] containing a title list of 'Robert's Collection of Welsh Ballads'. Books I-II contain 58 numbered titles, and an 'Index to Printers' is pasted inside the upper cover of the first book. Book III contains 71 numbered titles.
