Biographical history
The first mention of the Humphreys of Berriew and Montgomery is in 1646, of William Humphrey and his wife Elizabeth Morris, both of the parish of Bettws. It is believed that Richard Humphreys of Newtown was his nephew and he and his wife Jane married in 1663. They had four children and their eldest daughter Margaret (b. 1665), married William Thomas of Newtown, son of Francis Thomas of Pennant, Berriew. Their only son Charles Humphreys Thomas (b. 1708), took over his father's debt in exchange for the Pennant estate in 1730, and at the same time assumed the surname Humphreys. He married, in 1739, Susanna Grismond of Shrewsbury. Their second son, Humphrey (b. 1743) who had married Sarah Jones in 1768, had five children and Charles (b. 1770), their eldest son, married Mary, the daughter of Milward Dovaston of Llanymynech in 1791. Charles moved to Llanymynech in 1793 and let Pennant. Eventually, Pennant was sold to Mr Pryce Buckley-Williams in 1800. Charles and Mary had three children, and their only son Charles Milward Dovaston Humphreys (b. 1804), married Mary Brazener in 1823. Their eldest son, Charles [Jones] Humphreys (1824-1872) married Harriet, third daughter of John Joce Strick of Swansea in 1867. Their second daughter, Constance, married Dr F. Marston of Welshpool in 1906 and lived at Brithdir Hall, Berriew having taken over the tenancy. They purchased the property in 1916. Charles Lionel Joce Humphreys (b. 1905), the son of her brother, William Frederick Strick, inherited Brithdir Hall, on her death, in c. 1953.
