Biographical history
Ganwyd Richard Williams (Gwydderig, 1842-1917), bardd, ym Mrynaman, sir Gaerfyrddin. Aeth i weithio fel glöwr yn ifanc, yn dilyn marwolaeth ei dad, a chyflwynodd farddoniaeth i Y Gwladgarwr yn y cyfnod pan oedd William Williams (Caledfryn, 1801-1869) yn olygydd y golofn farddol. Ar ôl gweithio ym Mhennsylvania, UDA, am gyfnod, dychwelodd Gwydderig i Frynaman, a dechreuodd ei gerddi ennill gwobrau mewn eisteddfodau. Ei arbenigedd oedd yr englyn, a daeth yn adnabyddus yn y cylchoedd barddol fel 'Bardd yr englyn'. Cyhoeddwyd rhai o'i gerddi yn J.Lloyd Thomas (gol.), Detholion o waith Gwydderig (Llandybïe,1959). Yr oedd ei frawd Benjamin hefyd yn fardd.
Archival history
Formerly in the possession of J. Lloyd Thomas, Llanfyllin, editor of Detholion o waith Gwydderig (Llandybie, 1959) and was deposited by him in 1953 at the Royal Institute, Swansea, as attested by label inside front cover [for Evans read Thomas] (see also Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Cymru, Pwllheli, 1955: Cyfansoddiadau a Beirniadaethau, p. 124).
